Craftsman air compressor tank replacement

I did a search and seems leaking tanks (rust perforation) is common for these compressors. I bought this one, 220v, new in 1990 and never bothered to do any maintenance. Seems to run fine other than the tank. I went to the Sears parts site and the tank is discontinued, not available. Searched around some more and not seeing any aftermarket either. Any tips, thoughts? Seems a good 2stage compressor would be a shame to toss because of a tank replacement.

That is the way Sears works. They sell product, but parts

are only available up to and just until they fail, after which you

are obliged to buy a completely new product, guaranteed to

last up to and just until... If you need a tank, look at Grainger Parts.

I'd watch for a used compressor with a dead motor or pump on it (don't pay over $40-50).

Or just get another used compressor - I see that size unit for sale on my local CL often for $100-150.

You got a QUARTER-CENTURY of life out of it! That's not too bad in my book! My DeVibiss Rand 4000 is the same age as yours (bought it in 1990 right after college) and it is still kicking, although I have a couple much larger compressors waiting in the wings to replace it. But I was religious about draining the tank on it as well.

I got around to calling Sears today, to my surprise they said they have a replacement tank for my compressor $230 bucks delivered. Let's see what comes in....stay tuned.

I was looking around for a new compressor with similar specs. And everything is pretty expensive. Seems this old gear is better than what I see available, sure hope this tank replacement works out, hate to end up with some pos

That's not too bad for $230 to get exact tank replacement. Let us know if it was simple unbolt and re-assemble for your horizontal compressor.

Your other option is find an oil-less Craftsman air compressor (often called Crapsman . . . . because they are really junk) on CL that is dead or near dead and it's upright 26 to 33 gal tank is still fully functional. These are often $100 to $150 used.

Well updat: Sears tank never showed up. I call Sears, sorry sir small delay will be there next week. Well no tank shows up and I have to call again. Sears customer service lady, sorry sir we can't get that part after all, but we will send you a $50 dollar gift card for the hassle, thanks have a nice day. So anybody have a used tank they want to trade for a sers gift card?

Your in California, craiglist has many of those that work from $50-$100. I purchased mine similar to yours only older for $75 with air hose included. You can either use the one you buy or strip it for the tank.

As stated above.... there are more than enough oil free Craftsman compressors to find a tank because they all have trashed pumps

No, it is not a two stage, I misremembered it was a two stage. It looks like a two cylinder.

I will keep my eyes open on Craig's list. I want the satisfaction of fixing something and not just tossing it.

You might find a reasonably priced tank at compressorworld.com, or try to buy a 30 gal Sears replacement tank for some other model compressor that they still have replacement tanks for.
