My trusty Craftsman Nextec flashlights, C3 Led light and C3 portable radio got me through the night of Irma passing through with light, cell phone charging and information from the radio when the power cut off.

Hopefully you and family are safe and no property damage.
My sister lives near Tampa and sent pic of the bay being nearly empty.

Just done taking a bucket shower after checking on three homes my wife & I had to secure, to see how they fared. A long day, neighborhood had to use chainsaws to cut our way out because felled trees blocked the road. Nearly all the traffic lights are dark & many roads are down to one lane or two on a four lane, even major arterial roads are down to one each direction in places. Hundreds of old growth trees around the University of Miami were uprooted, and damage similarly in the Miami Roads neighborhood just outside of the Brickell Ave high rises. Brickell is next to Biscayne Bay, and was 1-2 ' deep as the surge turned downtown roads into canals.

No power since 0115 hrs Saturday. Better than being in Syria or Somalia, gonna take awhile, not as-bad as the flooding in Houston.

My buddy is a ways up the road from you in Lake Worth. They faired OK (other than tornadoes dropping all around them), but when he went outside to clear a tree with his chainsaw, he instantly became the most popular guy in the neighborhood. A quick job cutting one tree for the guy across the street turned into 7hrs of trimming the development. A couple of his neighbors were trying to clear their yards with hatchets and the others had nothing at all to cut with.

I don't envy you the work you have ahead to recover. Good luck.

What are you using for internet your phone?
I was wondering how data usage would be in an emergency.

Thankfully no damage, lost power overnight and half of today. Power came back on just as the generator ran out of gas.

The Bay emptying out was just crazy. Hope your sister is ok.

I had cell and texting throughout the storm and aftermath, but data was so slow it was useless. At least for my location and provider, I would not rely on data in a life/death situation.

I lived in Deerfield Beach during the 2004 and 2005 storms. Spent a few weeks back then with no power. Lots of work ahead.

Must be absolutely horrible in that hot humid clime.:scared:

I expect an average month wait for (working class) Florida residents esp since Houston will be sucking up resources too. Out-of-state linesman can be bribed..

Did you have to use any extra battery packs? Or did one for each device last a night?

You just sit in the shade with a breeze and a beer (& water).

I have a battery pack and use my car cigarette charger to keep it up. I sometimes leave the phone in the car on a charge cord & hidden from view, alarm on. A Remington SS 870 will greet any thieves if I hear the alarm. Data has been ok, if occasionally slow, wait & try again.

Homestead (of NASCAR fame) High School lost its roof. Six attributed storm deaths they know of, the amazing statistic is FPL (FL Power & Light, largest FL power utility) says 13 million were rendered powerless after the storm. That's probably like N & S Dakota, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado without power. Power out at the three homes we are responsible for maintaining. The infrastructure took a beating, & months to repair, or longer, a horrible blow to the economy. People living in the FL Keys are not allowed back to their homes yet, causing many upset residents, some who claim "I'll never evacuate next time!" Sadly, because of the storm surge, that could kill them as the storm surge wipes our everything from the Atlantic Ocean side to the Gulf of Mexico side or vice versa. Your mega Walmart probably has a larger parking lot than the distance in places in the FL Keys between the Atlantic Ocean & the Gulf of Mexico.

After Hurricane Andrew, with so much infrastructure damaged, they did temporary fixes first, then replaced that later as the area recovered. I was working fire-rescue then, since retired, I recall the misery of those times. Lines of people everywhere, waiting for food, for potable water (compromised municipal water supply systems, "boil your water" announcements, hard to do with power out and all gas now in short supply). Gas station lines everywhere that has has, & those few & far between. I recall people following tankers to their delivery stops, like a caravan. Unfortunately it's going to be like this for a long time. Schools in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale) "closed Indefinitely!"

My cousin and her family are all OK in Savannah, GA, actually on Tybee Island. Lots of tree damage, including one on their car, but otherwise all OK. Their house is unflooded and undamaged.
