You guys may be aware of this and/or might not care :wtf:.

A wife of a co-workers sisters mother in law works at a Kmart store and told me that they are getting rid of all the Craftsman branded stuff. Not sure why but thought that they might be heavily discounting it to move it.

Just a heads up in case anyone is out bargain hunting. I haven't been inside a Kmart in years but I'm going to stop by one today and check it out.

I do not even understand how Kmart stays in business. Every time I go into one there is no one to be found.

That said, the one by me hasn't had more than a handful of Craftsman for a long time.

Over here Kmart is much nicer than Walmart and actually has good service except sporting goods. Also the prices are a bit lower on somethings compared to WM. They have like 5 aisles of craftsman and lisle tools.

You talking about that K-Mart on Finley and Roosevelt? If not, it's the same thing there, the place is like a ghost town.

This may be good for bargain hunters, but I wonder what it means for the Craftsman brand.

Kind of opposite here. Both KM and WM are not all that great compared to Target. K-mart is the worst (both the store side and customers are kind of scummy)....Walmart is in the middle and Target is by far the nicer of the three. :wtf:

I haven't been into a Kmart in well over 30 years. They were simply scummy back then. All I hear now is that they are even worse. Walmart has been about 25. Ever since they ditched the "Made in USA" push I can't stand them at all. If it weren't for the "Toy Isle", as my son calls it, I wouldn't go into Target either. You see, I don't like the French much! I must admit it though, Target is clean and the people are nice. (Yes, I refuse to drink Grey Goose also.)

Boy, I must have tough standards or I'm a bigot! You choose.

A couple of years ago, after the Sears merger, the Kmart near me had a very nice, big, selection of Craftsman tools both hand and power. They are now down to a small selection of Evolve stuff.
Their auto department has virtually nothing too, unless you need air fresheners.

I am truely amazed that Kmart is still around. They were so bad that when they were going through bankrupcy reorganization, they closed all stores in Texas.

When they were here, I was not really impressed since they never seemed to be able to find what I was looking for in stock. Since Kmart has left the bottom of the market here in Texas, walmart has taken that spot and they seem to get worse by the day. I do my best to avoid them.

They have never been a really well run company and I suspect that it will never change.

I checked the store here. They had a small selection of hand tools and some power tools. None of it was discounted.

I'll keep an eye on it though.

I'm not sure where exactly K-Mart fits in these days. The one's around here don't seem to be doing well either. I think all that is keeping them alive is the home stuff via the Martha Stewart line (good stuff so the wife tells me).

You all are right, their automotive and home repair sections are a joke.

All the Kmarts in my area closed long ago. Replaced by WalMart and Home Depot, and one location is now condos. Lampert took over Kmart and then Kmart bought Sears. Sears also owns a part of OSH which is a California chain. Sears brands then showed up in Kmart and OSH, which makes sense.

But now OSH has been replacing Craftsman in the tool department. Kmart is doing the same. This is strange. Something is going on.

The Kmart in my area started clearing out their Craftsman stuff almost a year ago.

They still carry a bit of the stuff but not as much as before, I was able to get a couple extensions before they were all gone.

If it is being phased out, Kmart's keeping it on the down low around here. Kmart's flyer in today's, (Sunday), paper has a Sears insert in it with the usual sales, Craftsman included.

My only concern with Kmart and Craftsman is that it would be nice to grab a few bargains as it swirls down the toilet like when OSH clearanced a lot of Craftsman a year or so ago. One way or another I think Craftsman will survive as a semipro premium brand, at least for the next twenty years or so.

10 or so years ago Kmart was doing great in SoCal. We had a Super Kmart with one side a well run grocery operation with fresh produce, meat, and edging toward larger size packages of many foods. Closest Kmart had a tire and auto center run by Penske where I used to take my Mustang for a Mobil 1 oil change.

Now 80% of the Kmart stores are closed, ghost towns before it happened in some kind of quasi Sears/Walmart product mix sliding toward Big Lots.

Walmart near us anchors an older mall with Sears on the other end and JC Penney's in the middle, its open 24/7 and during normal hours has a dozen registers stacked with people. Target is maybe 1/3 to 1/2 the traffic, but used to be the cheapest place to buy oil, now I almost never end up buying anything.

Costco and Sams are plenty busy with people leaving with car loads.

The k-mart by me has been phasing out the tools for about six months now. They are down to a handful of tools now.

Chris

That's what I've noticed by me, since about May or June the aisle has shrunk in half or more. They used to have a few Cman toolboxes, including roll arounds, that are all gone now. When I was last in there in mid-December they had the Evolv tools and for Cman were basically screwdrivers sets, adjustable wrenches, drop lights and magnetic parts dishes!
