Craftsman Bench Grinder Issue

The grinder is approximately 20 years old. It starts turning with the switch but when you add light friction to the wire wheel, it slows down to a stop but the motor continues to hum. I know nothing about electric motors. What is causing this?

Does the wheel stay stopped after you stop contacting it? Are you sure the wheel isn't just slipping and needs tightened?

It will start back up again if I remove the part causing the friction. I've checked the wheels and they are tight.

I hesitate to suggest you open it up but that is probably the only way it will get fixed. A loose or corroded connection of the motor windings, a bad connection between a winding and it's pigtail. A power cord or plug with only a few strands of wire left, a corroded switch or a burned out winding could all cause the problem. Unless you have a basic knowledge of electricity and motors and can use a DVM, I suggest you find local help. Trouble shooting remotely with a person that is not familiar with what he is looking at is not likely to do much good. It would be helpful to whoever works on it if you find the wiring diagram for your model number. Some manuals are on line with that information.

Thanks. I'll begin taking it apart and hopefully will find something obvious. I'll search for manuals too.
