Looking for information on this Craftsman Block Grinder Wet Sharpening & Honing attachment. I purchased one and the small gear that drives the unit has disintegrated into a million pieces upon arrival. I am hoping someone may have one that is in service. I need some dimensions on the gear and its tooth count to remake it. I would even provide one to whoever may have one they can take apart to measure and photograph. Has anyone ever seen one of these in operation?

Looks simple enough to make, either by buying a gear from a place like Boston or by cutting a gear from scratch. You can get the pitch and PA from the mating gear and should be able to measure the center of one to the other to determine the number of teeth, if you can't reassemble it week enough to tell.

My googlefu is not very strong, but I did find an Ebay listing of one just like yours with a broken gear as well. From that listing, it shows the broken gear appears to be a small pinion that rides inside a large ring gear. Oddly, this listing has a picture of a stained manual that looks just like your stained manual.

The opposite side of this attachment has a set of pulleys. One side measures .600" and the other measures 3.5".

The small pulley is the driven pulley which is affixed to the grinder arbor. Which is coupled with an o-ring as a belt per say.

With the help of a friend. Worked out the math.

The craftsman block grinder is 3,580 RPM.
The driven pulley measures .600"and the larger pulley measures 3.5".
The larger gear the grinding wheel attaches too has 88 teeth.

3580RPM * (0.6/3/5) = 615.70 RPM BEFORE THE GEARING.

615.70RPM * (?/88teeth) = 100 RPM (as mentioned as approx. RPM in Craftsman catalog)

? = 14 teeth

Plugging 14 into that equation gives me 97.95 RPM.

The large gear with 88 teeth has a pitch diameter of 7.33". Resulting in a 12 diametrical pitch gear.

So I will need to locate a 14 tooth, 12 DP gear. Machinable. End result was ordering this gear from Mc-Master Carr. I will then modify in my lathe by taking it to width and boring out the gear to press fit on 9/16 shaft.

Glad you figured that out. Fwiw, the smaller pulley is the drive pulley. The driven pulley is the larger pulley that is driven by the drive pulley.

Were you able to get the part, or make it? I have the same problem from a tool my father left me… Thanks.

Still working on it. My gear from Mc Master didn’t work. I believe it’s metric possibly. Hoping to finish it soon once I cut the blank.

Thank you very much for your quick response. I was wondering if you got any written information about the gear from the machinist? In other words did he write down dimensions. I have access to a machinist that could make one, but I don’t know the information about the gear

Hi, thanks so much for your help. I found a drawing. I believe it’s the one that you’re referring to. I just wanna make sure.
