I have been reading the various threads about these grinders. I also ran across one one CL. It's a 257.191300. Looks like the picture, but how do you tell the build year? I can see the serial number, is there a way to decode it? It's a 1/3hp, 6" wheel model so I assume it is a lower end home line. The only clue to it's age is the tag says "meets ansi blah blah 1968", so it is newer than 1968.
They want $50, I don't think it's that desirable, is it worth it?
thanks guys!

1. Copy the picture from the c-list ad and post it here. The many Eyes Of The (GJ) World will convene upon it and provide feedback.

2. Sometimes there is a stamp on the underside of the main housing that shows date of manufacture. On mine, the stamp was worn off (it's ink, not stamped into the metal). I don't think you can tell the exact date of manufacture just from the model #, but it gives you a range.

Plastic lampshade, logo style on tag are similar to my 1/2 HP bought new circa 1982-83. This one is missing the eyeshades and coolant tray, as I'm sure you've noted.

I would like to have something like this, but I am new to this and don't want to make a mistake and buy an "end of the era" cheapened version
thanks for the info

Laser: that Craftsman looks like the plastic "toy" version blocks we usually pass on, but yours seems to be cast which is interesting. i want to hear from the guys about this one because i can't say I've seen your version before. it might be a keeper.

That's not an "old" C-Man block grinder . . . but a new kids on block grinder !! ;)

Interesting newer version none the less.

Negotiate down the price to $35 and you'll have grinder for life on the cheap. :D

update
I went and looked at it, sure enough, it's a plastic case!
The guy was nice and had a great shop and interesting projects. He did have a older Craftsman block grinder, buy wouldn't let it go. Good contact, we have alot of similar interest. Maybe down the road it will payoff.

Laser: that wrinkle paint job on that plastic grinder looks awesome and happy to hear you met a good guy. also glad to hear you passed on that grinder because you'll find a block soon. are you on Tourqueman's list? go on the block thread and ask him to put you there or PM him with all your contact information probably is the best way if you want another option to getting a block.

Laser: there are not many still on the list looking for the 1/3 and 1/2 blocks so it might help if you can't find one in your neck of the woods. the word is out in my area and they sell quick.

I am the one of which you speak.

You are not on my list, yet.

Even-though that model you looked at, has the desirable model number prefix 257., it is the result of de-contenting of quality materials. I suspect if it was inspected, it would have sleeve bearings and not the ball bearings of the earlier 257's.

These are the styles you want.
Older round top Block style motor grinder.

Newer flat top Block.

Not all block grinders are CM Block grinders. The Black & Decker looks like a CM, but is far from the same quality.

Now you know, start looking for a Block grinder. Accept no substitutes or imposters.

Actually it says it is roller bearing on the ID plate. If I found a complete one of these for $30 I would probably pick it up.
