Are these ones any good or should I spend my money on a different brand/type?

I have the first set. I like it, but only use it very occasionally. If you plan on using it daily/weekly, i would recommend getting one of those real deal full sets...changing the tips can get annoying real quick.

I have the one in the second link (or the bigger model, but similar) and I am happy with it. Granted I do not use it on a regular basis, mostly when I was rebuilding my transmission. I changed the tips a couple of times without problems. They replaced a cheap chinese set that someone gave me.

I have the second link as well. I really like it a lot better than the first link. And it doesn't take up as much space a full set of them. I don't use them daily, but they always work when I need them. While changing tips takes a little bit of time, it is better than losing the space in the tool box for the 8 pliers it replaces.

I have a pair of the second link. They ****. Changing tips is a *****, the tips are flimsy, the entire plier is flimsy. The arms are bulky, and limit where you go and how close you can get. ***** when you have the snap ring, and the flimsy-ness of the pliers lets the clip go!
I still have them, but don't use them. Upgraded to a solid tip Snap On set.

I had the 3rd set, which is a bit of a pain to use sometimes when one of the levers on one side of the tool switches direction in use. The smaller one in the 3rd set broke (weak internal switching mechanism), so I took it to my local Sears and they said that the brown/black Pro style was discontinued. What they exchanged it for was the red/black Pro unit in the 2nd link.

The ones in the 2nd link definitely are a little more user friendly with the single switching mechanism, and it doesn't change direction easily in use. The operating mechanism is also a slightly more robust design.

Guess who manufacturers the style shown in the 2nd link for Sears? Channel-Lock, which also has a lifetime warranty.

And stride/imperial manufactur them for channel-lock, and bluepoint among others.

The 2nd link works well, I have a small and large pair and they seem robust. Im with the poster above, being non-daily use I cant justify a full set of solid tip pliers or the box realestate.
