I got this cut off tool from Sears a couple of months ago and went to use it today but when I connect it to my air compressor, the darn thing is running all the time, not full blast but it just won't shut off completely. Kind of dangerous. Is there some adjustment I'm missing on these things? I read the directions but didn't find anything. I'm running the correct psi but just cannot figure out why the thing won't shut off. Maybe I'm an idiot and it's supposed to be that way:confused:.........

Take it back and get a Florida Pneumatic, Ingersoll Rand ,Chicago Pneumatic, Mac, Matco or Snapon. Sounds like the valve is stuck; you might put air tool oil through the tool and around the valve area. Again, I think the most of the Craftsman line air tools are junk (aside from the rebadged IR impacts); just go buy one of the better brands and you won't regret it. These can be dangerous tools so, a quality tool is also a safer tool; here is a link to a number of models/brands of better quality:

The whole line of craftsman die grinder based tools ****. I bought a 90 degree die grinder maybe a year ago, and it sucked. Had very little power. I have a pretty big compressor, that has no problem running my snap on/IR/mac/hutchins etc air tools with lots of power, but the craftsman just didnt perform. I retuned it, and since have bought several from IR/snappy/mac and they all are great.

I bought that too, Craftsman club sale I think was around $25. First on was leaking air, so I exchanged it...replacement same thing. it doesn't run but rather is continually letting a little bit of air by. I do notice that once in a while it slowly turns by it's self. I used it once and was dissapointed, it did not have much power and could be bogged down. I ended up using my electric grinder instead. I'm never buying a craftsman air tool again.

Sidebar....how are the aircat ones, I've come to appreciate how good a quiet air tool is. I wan't to get the quietest one possible.

Anyone know who makes those for Sears?

Coach

That cut off tool is made by Florida Pneumatic.

Most Craftsman mechanics air tools are made by F.P. these days. A few are made by Ingersoll Rand. The ones that come free with a compressor may from somewhere else.

It was probably just a QC thing. To the OP: Go return the Craftsman, get another and see how it works before you completely write off Craftsman. there are too many people on this board who write off Craftsman because either A) they had a bad experience once or B) They read or heard about someone else's bad experience.

For the vast majority of people, Craftsman tools do an exceptional job. A lot of professionals use them, but they don't post on message boards, so you really don't get to hear from them.

I've looked at all the FP catalogs and cannot see one that looks like the Craftsman; of course it could be a unique OEM model for other markets and not sold under their name. Anyone know why people think it is made by FP; any supporting info? Just curios because I love my red die grinder made by FP and the quality seems so much higher then the Craftsman air tool line.

it has the acrylic shield that's why I think it is very similar to husky / FP.
Likely the whole batch of the craftsman was bad in your store.

Just go to home depot and pick up the husky for like $30, cheaper than craftsman regular price and it's assembled in USA.

I also have husky fatty straight die grinder made by FP that thing is powerful

I have that one. It might use a lot of air. Not sure since my first and only compressor is a craftsman 25 gallon professional line and it can't keep up with this tool.

Yes, i was at HD and saw Husky cutting wheel. it was made in USA.

.

That's what I did, I actually exchanged it at a different store and same thing. It's been a few months now, maybe I'll see if I can exchange it again to see if they got better.

How much was the Craftsman?

You can find a snap on PT250 on ebay for $50-80 used, and have one of the best cut off tools available.

Doesn't surprise me. That compressor was not designed to run that tool continuously.

I think I have the same compressor as you. And, if you respect its limitations, it will serve you well...

Well I returned the cut off tool to Sears today, the only good one they had in the entire store that didn't leak and run continuously was the floor model and the sears guy told me it was probably a QC issue with the ones that store was issued(like someone mentioned here), he offered me the floor model but I declined......

Good to know. Sanders, grinders and cut off tools seem to be its weakpoint. Other stuff is ok. Honestly I don't mind that much for the thing to play catch up. It's not like I'm painting a car or anything.
