Can you post a link...be careful too, a lot...well most of the impact sockets are made in China.

Last time I was in a store, every set (of pretty much everything) was Hecho en Chine.

That said, I just noticed my 3/8" set is Chinese. I guess that's good that I've had them over a year, and only noticed because I looked for it. They work, but there's better deals on Chinese impact sockets out there.

The Chinese Craftsman impacts may be good quality, I don't know, I've never used them. But if you're going to get imported sockets, there are some very nice Taiwanese made ones sold by Grey Pneumatic, Sunex and HF. The top-end HF impacts are quite nice, I have a set. They're super cheap, but the set does skip some sizes, if that matters to you.

I was looking at the Craftsman Evolv impact sockets in a Kmart, and they said "Taiwan" on them.

I don't think Evolve was ever USA made.

The last USA-made Craftsman impact sockets I saw here was a year ago during a similar sale, at which point, I bought the last of remaining metric sets. SAE were all Chinese. And if you want Chinese impact sockets, like Stephen says, the HF impacts are good enough and cheaper than Craftsman.

Main thing to look for in any impact socket is they are made from chro-moly alloy. If they don't say that, then take a pass.

My local Sears still have like 3 sizes of SAE USA deep impact sockets. I hardly ever use SAE but I still might pick up what they've got.

This is the case/packaging they show

The pictures don't matter. It took them a long while to take the "USA" markings off many of their pictures, and only after people complained.

You might order it and get an old stock USA made set. But you might get a new stock Chinese, set, too. I guess they only way to be certain is to check and see if your local store has any USA made sets and then buy online and pick up in the store and then make sure to get a USA made set.

For example, check out the 26 piece wrench set:
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-26-p...p-00946935000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1

The picture still shows USA made wrenches (Note that they don't have the fat lobster claw, showing they're the USA made examples.)

But one of the recent reviewers says he got a Chinese set.

Or, check out this example:
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-prof...p-00945964000P?prdNo=5&blockNo=5&blockType=G5
This picture is the old USA made Craftsman Pro set, but they just photoshopped out the "USA" marking. The set you receive will likely be Chinese. A reviewer even noted he received a Chinese set.

How often do you use deep metric impact sockets besides lug nut sizes? This would be for a home DIY guy. I have the SAE set that I got a while back for $35 on sale. USA of course. I mostly work on old broken down, rusty junk so SAE gets me pretty far. :lol_hitti

I have a nice matco flip socket (19mm/21mm) thanks to a member on here , but wondered if I would really use the metric deep impacts? That is only if my sears has a USA set left, which I am pretty sure they have a few.

Probably 80-90% of the time... I only use shallow impacts when the deeps won't fit. This isn't too often as the impact gun itself is so wide that a shallow socket on the end won't make much difference.

If you don't mind my asking what do you primarily work on?

In case no one's noticed they seem to do this sale about twice a year and have done so for at least the last 5 years that I can remember. Their "$90" impact sockets go on sale for $45.

I'm sure they're not worth $90 and considering the cost of the HF units and how well they generally hold up, I'm really not sure the Craftsmans are worth $45, at least the Chinese Craftsmans.

Picked up a set of metrics.

I bought a set of standards that are imported when they first came out last summer. I've used them extensively in the shop and out wheeling repairing trail carnage in some harsh weather--snow, rain, 100 degree days.

No problems

I love craftsman tools, but it's hard to even justify the $39 sales price for the 12 piece impact sockets when you can get them the harbor freight 13 piece for $30. It's on sale now for $24.00 and with coupon it comes out to $18. And it's probably just as good.

I would stay away from the ones in your link. HF says, they are "durable chrome vanadium construction." That's not the cro-moly stuff you need to have.

Agreed. I believe the Pittsburg Pro are cr-mo, and are similar in price to these craftsman on sale.

Does anyone know if the Craftsman are Chrome Vanadium or Chrome Molly?

I think I'm going to take a ride over to the local store (shows 4 in stock) to see if they have any new-old-stock made in the USA. If so, then order online and pick up at store. Impact sockets are slow movers at my store, so they might have MUSA ones sitting on the shelves gathering dust.

I have a set of harbor freight impacts and they too have served well.

The wife works for Sears so I get the employee discount as well not to mention the SYWR. I'll always support a business that employs family or friends.

Another bonus is the case the crafty sockets come in as my intent on their use is to be portable. I can throw them in the back of the bronco with the other set along with the impact gun for trail repairs

Just to touch on the HF sockets again,

The high-end ones are Cro-mo, the cheaper line are CR-v.

I have a set of shallow and deep Pittsburgh Pro ones (the Cro-mo) versions and they've held up really well for me. I don't use them a ton, so I can't justify spending much more on impact sockets.

Here's the deep metric set. The one downside is that it does skip 18mm and 16mm. It also doesn't include a 10mm. That wasn't a deal breaker for me, as my shallow set does have those sizes. I paid $23.99 for the deep set.

The lack of an 18mm would be a deal breaker for me. Jeep vehicles are full of that size.

The local HF has a new manager and he is enforcing the proof of purchase for tool exchanges. Not sure if this is something new on a company level or varies depending on location. YMMV

This is for automotive work Dodge/Toyota/Hyundai vehicles... just general stuff.

Thanks, I was just curious. I have needed them in the past, but usually borrow from a neighbor down the street. He is very generous about lending me tools, but I really prefer to have my own stuff.

This sounds strange, but I found a semi local small sears store that has a few sets of the old USA made stock in metric and sae. Would anyone want me to pick up a set for them? I think I could fit them in a small flat rate box ($5.80) if I take them out of the package. It would be like $50 shipped. Not trying to make a buck just thought someone may like a set of the USA made ones. I plan on picking up a metric set tomorrow evening. If you do, please PM asap.

Well just to close my previous post. It looks like the stock of USA impacts is really drying up. If you are still looking for a set without the ebay gouge, I would recommend that you try the small sears hardware stores in your area. Try to find a store in a bad part of town or basically a store that people don't shop at much. In this case, the more run down the better. :lol_hitti

I see a lot of people ordering and shipping to store to get sale prices and stuff. Do they not price match the online price at your stores or they just didn't have it in stock there? Just curious...

Prices are 10-15% cheaper online, plus you can use a discount code. You also don't have to go in and risk dealing with incompetent employees. Plus, you're more guaranteed the item that way.

The 10-15% is the reason I get them to price match it, so it comes out the same price. The last 4 Deal Of The Day items I purchased were price matched in the store. Just seemed like longer to wait to be shipped unless it wasn't in stock in the store. I go by Sears on a regular basis though too so I kinda know what's gonna be in stock.

As far as coupon codes I've only had very few that actually worked for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but its too much hassle to go through customer service for a $5 discount. That would likely take an hour to get accomplished judging by my previous dealings with them.

Like I said I was just curious. Thought maybe I was missing out on something big. It appears we just do what works best for us. ;)

This. I don't trust a Sears employee to do, well, anything really. And small "authorized hometown" dealers can be even more sketchy or argumentative. It's better to just order online for in-store pickup. Then the price is locked in and they've hopefully set your item aside. But I don't even trust that and would not be surprised in the least if I get there and they say "sorry we forgot" or "the online inventory was wrong." Hasn't happened yet but I set my hopes low and then I can be pleasantly surprised if they get it right.

FatboyF150 was working at HF and had a thread on this awhile ago....probably 1-2 years ago. It's supposed to be company-wide policy to require a receipt for lifetime warranty items.
