I bought the reproduction slow speed pulley system from JZiggy and couldn't be happier. He was very helpful with the order process and the pulley system works great.

I am a big fan of folks that take the time to make unique parts like this. The time and effort that goes into to making this niche parts is much appreciated.

A couple observations:

1. The pulley system is well made and uses a "modern" pulley. JZiggy has done a nice job of sourcing and fabricating a very nice system.

2. The modern pulley is slightly taller than the original pulleys by about one sheave overall. This is easily compensated for on the motor end but the belt has to be slightly cocked to fit on the quill end. Not a big deal but noteworthy.

Very happy with the purchase and the way the part performs.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

A big thanks for InkyFord for his astute observations and ideas for improvement that he shared with me off-line.

The pulley I use is indeed taller than the factory step pulleys. If someone knows where to source step pulleys with tighter sheave spacing, please do let me know!

I can see how this could have some alignment issues if you're running it at max speed (top of middle pulley connected to top of spindle pulley). Fortunately most of us are using these for SLOW speeds which utilize the bottom set of pulleys, which should be easily aligned.

I'd love to hear how these things hold up for those of you who have run them for a while. Did they need to be regreased at any point, etc?

I aligned mine with the front pulley with slow speed being the goal. Then adusted the motor and pulley in rear to match with slow speed one.

JZiggy...thanks for letting me bother you with all the texts this past week or so. I fired my drill press up yesterday for the first time and it worked great.

I am wondering if the step pulley is 1/2" and the original belts were 3/8" . 3/8 step pulleys are available but not easy to find. Listed by Grainger and such but not actually in stock.
Just a thought.

I just received my reproduction slow speed pulley system from JZiggy and couldn't be happier with the timeliness of the shipment or the quality of the part. After checking the pulley over I discovered that it was a different diameter size pulley than my Delta system used.
The Delta uses a 4 step pulley that's 2"-5" and the pulley supplied on this system is a smaller Chicago Die Cast # 141 pulley with steps 2"-4".
I have just installed the attachment but as of yet have not acquired the belts yet but I'm sure this is gonig to work great.
The overall height difference between the two pulleys was a concern due to belt alignment however there is only about 1/8" overall difference so for the Delta I don't see a problem. JZiggy and I are discussing how to adapt an acceptable 2"-5" pulley to his system and I'm sure the outcome will be added to this thread when it's available. Right now for the Delta I believe a Chicago Die Cast # 147 may be the best alternative as the parts for these older Delta Drill Presses are hard to come by. Also I've found that the cost difference between the # 141 and #147 are almost double so there is consideration with that.
Stay tuned and for now I'm ready to be able to start drilling "slow".

As stated in the above quote JZiggy and I have been working on an upgrade to his original slow speed pulley attachment for my Delta drill press. It seems the pulleys on my delta are similar to the #147 Chicago Die Cast pulley 2"-5" diameter. The Chicago Die Cast # 141 pulley with steps 2"-4" that JZiggy supplied in his original design worked perfectly however aligned slightly different and being a different size just wasn't correct for the Delta.
JZiggy and I messaged back and forth a few times and he finally found a source for a pulley that matched very nicely. The pulleys align perfectly and the speeds are as they should be for the Delta. As seen in the attached pictures the pulley is a little thicker on the 5" side so using a straight edge to align the pulleys doesn't work so a little eye-balling is necessary. I still need to dial in the belt sizes or maybe get link belts but for now I'm drilling slow.
Thanks Jordan!!!

I can highly recommend link belts. Easy to size correctly and I feel that it is smoother and quieter. YMMV

Steve, thanks for posting up the details of your experience. I'm glad the new pulley works better for your setup.

The #147 pulley is indeed more expensive but it provides a little wider "gear" ratio and the spacing fits with better with the pulleys commonly found on vintage drill presses. If anyone prefers this style on the pulleys I sell I'm happy to work it out for you.

I just got another batch of 6 together:

Other than making pulleys I hadn't had a lot of drill press specific activities going on in the shop lately until a local GJ'er helped me back into it by picking up a "problem" drill press for me.

It turned out to be a 13.5" Craftsman in a pile of parts. The pot metal quill lock had seized in the head casting so the owner continued to use it by simply forcing the quill up and down. This action eventually caused the spindle to loosen up and start to back out of the top of the head casting.

Apparently this poor problem drill press got put into storage for a long time until it was eventually taken back out and given to a friend. This friend was not drill press savvy and attempted to use it in some unsafe ways because it was not working properly. After a number of stitches in his hand his wife informed him he was selling it.

This drill press got a light cleaning and a fresh set of premium sealed bearings from Accurate Bearing. The motor bearings were cleaned with brake cleaner and repacked with grease in situ. This method worked perfectly and was a lot easier than pulling the motor casting apart. The final "touch" it needed was some Prussian blue on the quill to determine a high spot causing the action to be less than smooth. The end result was a very smoothly operating press:

The story doesn't quite end there. The buyer of this restored drill press gave me yet another drill press as partial payment. This turned out to be a cute little sleeve-bearing Companion press, totally original. It was pretty interesting to see how this little guy was put together. They are very easy to work on. The quill has one single ball bearing which is an odd-size thrust bearing at the end. I was again able to save this one by thorough cleaning and regreasing.

The end product turned out very nice and it went to another good home. Now I only have my own drill press in the shop and it's getting lonely again :)

I know this is an older post but since I just went through the bearing replacement on the one I recently acquired I will post what I know at this point. The upper bearings on the pulley shaft are 205 bearings from I got from oreilly auto parts. the quill bearings are stamped MRC 202 SF 8 and according to what I could find have a 5/8" bore. Oreilly got their 202 bearings and the bore was too small. Inside measured .582, and the originals measured .621 hope this will help someone else out there. I wound up repacking the original quill bearings and reinstalling them for now atleast.

Replacement bearings are probably 6202 5/8. Regular 6202 have a 15mm bore.

Yes, Pretty common on Ebay too.

Hi everyone! I picked this drill press up last month and was hopeful to learn more about it from this forum. I was also hoping to see I could get a multi speed pulley made for it. Thanks!!

I hope the new pulley works out well! Would love to see pics when you get it set up and get the press all tuned. Let us know if you need help.

It's nice to feel like my drill press has finally stabilized into the setup I am totally happy with. The production table, shored up with a long bottle jack, is a nice stable work surface with lots of room for tools and in-process items. The Ralmike's XY table has been awesome and provides great functionality.

When I'm not making pulleys for GJ'ers I find this setup is perfect for machining all manner of brackets and fixtures that I use on my vehicles.

Light milling of reinforced plastic

Brackets for a catch can install

Awning bracket for roof rack

Bracket to adapt exhaust damper to muffler clamp:

The projects just keep on coming!
