Hi everyone. I am looking for some help on repairing a Craftsman Drill Press that was given to me. I am at work and asked the wife what the model number was and she sent "149.2133330" and I did a web search and it looks like this http://www.finewoodworking.com/ToolGuide/ToolGuideProduct.aspx?id=5421

Problem is that the bit will walk quite a bit and I would prefer to repair it vs replacing it. Can anyone send me in the right direction for parts or adjustments? The cheaper the better.

First you need to determine where the issue is.

Does it walk because the drill is not spinning concentric?

o Drill bit not straight?
o Chuck not holding the bit straight? (jaw wear, of dirty, jaws/interior of the chuck?)
o Damaged chuck or one simply built poorly?
o Arbor bent?

Is the quill loose in the housing?

Is the spindle loose in the quill?

o Bad bearings?

When you say walk, how far? Put a pencil in the chuck and run it to see how far from center it moves and is the "drawing" producing either a concentric or oblong shape? Did you try this with different bits and how much of the bit was protruding from the chuck?

When I say run it with a pencil in the chuck, I mean manually spin the pulley at the top. I wouldn't want you to have an unbalanced pencil zooming at 1600rpm. :)

When I first looked at the replys I thought "of course the bit was sharp" like I know everything. So I tried the pencil and it didnt move a bit. Not one bit.

I realized that it did this when I was trying to drill thru steel so I am wondering if it only does it when under higher stress. Or maybe my bit wasnt as sharp as i thought, but the bits were fairly new. I think it moved about a quarter inch.

If it does deflect, is it worth it to buy a new chuck or assembly? And can someone direct me to where to look?

Is this adjustable?

if the spindle is loose in the Quill, then it probably needs bearings.

Quill to housing, it depends. Get some close up and detailed pics up of your DP, and show us where/what is happening. So far you information amounts to "it's broke", and all we can do is guess.

matt if your work piece isnt perfectly perpendicular to the bit it will cause the bit to want to walk especially if the bit isnt very sharp , or if the bit was sharpened unevenly ..

Matt, out of curiosity, how fast did you have the drill press set to run with steel? Maybe you had the rpms too high?
