Enough have sold over $250 recently to make anything possible. Already conceded that it could also be less then what I would want.

Both of those were sold as "best offer", and may easily have sold for $200 or less. I've sold several, and highest sold for less than $200 w/shipping, and I had fresh high-grade bearings and new belts. I'm not confident that they fetch huge $$.

Was wondering if there were any hacks to the feed stop? My newly acquired Craftsman doesn't currently have one. Thanks, love this thread

The feed stop rod is threaded 5/8-18. I've never looked for the knurled nuts, but you may be able to find them. Standard 5/8-18 hex nuts may also work, but opposite corners of the nut cannot be greater than 1-1/8" apart.

So I have 2 Slo-Speed attachments. One on, the pulley behind the quill pulley where the arm comes up to the adjustment arm, one of mine has a good amount of play, where the other one has some but not nearly as much. Does play matter on this arm? Will it effect the speed setting drastically? Almost done with restoring my one 150, just got the base, pole, and aluminum pulleys left to do.

It sounds like the rear bore through the arm has severe wear. Check this post by RHJO51 and the discussion that follows.

I had a Vari-Slo once where that arm was bent/bowed-up in the center.

There are several possible causes:
  • a slow and gradual mis-alignment of the spindle pulley to the V-S assembly
In my case, the spindle pulley retaining screws were either broken or missing. I don't recall which, but I do remember that the spindle pulley was not fully seated into the head frame.

  • a loose set screw on the V-S column clamp
This would allow the assembly to move on the column. Look for scraping witness marks from the set screw on the column.

  • sticking V-S pulleys
This would exert extra stress on the linkage parts.

  • bad bearings in the V-S
This could cause the bearing shaft to spin.

  • improper V-S installation

  • natural wear from lots of use

Does play matter? I guess it depends on how badly it's worn. If it is close to breaking through, yes.

Does it affect speed? Probably not significantly.

Depending on how badly worn that could probably be drilled out, sleeved with a bushing and be good as new. You would want to make sure you drill it "on center" so best done in a rigid fixture (Mill?), and possibly with an end mill the right size

Got the headstock painted this weekend. Damn she is pretty. She'll be making milkshakes here pretty soon.

Before and after attached.
I love the restore! Great job. Where did you get a new front "Craftsman" plate? I can't find them anywhere. Mine is the exact same one. Chris

Ebay. I think I just had search saved for “craftsman nameplate”. The badge is common for a lot of the tools but there is about 2 different sizes used. Make sure your center to center hole distance is the same.

Think I paid $10.

Thanks guys! This one doesn't pivot front to back, but up and down on an angle very easily. JB Weld and drill it is! Plus new belts, which thanks for the part numbers too!

I've always thought these Craftsman 150 drill presses were very cool ever since I've seen them on GJ. I think those three levers on the right side are pretty cool. I was particularly interested in the bench model due to my garage setup.

In fact it's been like that with other Craftsman stuff also. I remember seeing the gray-red toolboxes on GJ thinking those are cool. About a month or two later I actually stumbled across one of those and picked it up just cause I saw it on GJ and have been using it ever since :)

So I've kept my eye open for these older drill presses and almost picked one up 6 months ago, but unfortunately it didn't work out.

Then I found a floor model on local CL recently, but the guy wants $400, which is too high IMO.

Yesterday I found a Dunlap 103.23621 on CL in Oregon. It was listed for 15 days for $85 and apparently no one was interested in it. I called a family member who lives close by and he picked it up the same day for $80. I still have to wait a month for it to make the way to me, but it's coming :)

Of course today shows up an actual Craftsman an hour from me on CL for $100...(even though that one is a floor model) - see attached pictures.

Re: The Classic Craftsman 100/150 Drill Press

I’m pursuing this if the price is right. Check out the lathe chuck mounted to the table. Very good idea for square and round parts.

I finally remembered to take my camera down to the shed to snap a couple pics of my project 150. I took a couple scrap Radarange magnatron magnets and attached an LED light to the left side. It won't pull loose easily. Originally a switch was mounted to the right side where there were holes. I wish the holes were on the opposite side and I would of mounted the light permanently.

This drill press is especially important to me. My father bought it in the mid 50s. He passed away in 1963 of colon cancer at age 30. It was used in my step-fathers blacksmith shop until he passed away in October. I was able to snag it. It has been thru a couple floods and who knows what else.

I would still like to find an original headband to replace my makeshift one. Before and after pictures. Thanks for all the guidance. I am looking for my next one. Bear

I took a couple more pictures today. The foot pedal (colored co-ordinated), as well as my chuck key that I used the "Franklee" treatment on. I hung it from one of the key holder things the janitors always had on their belts that spool out. I went over to Sears to buy a screwdriver about a month ago. It was a ghost town. No single screwdrivers. This was on a can opener. I figured Sears was going to curl their toes up when we stopped selling them fridges a few months back. We got stuck big time when Wards went belly up. I actually had cause to use the drill today. Glad I have it.

Very nice, Bear!

I really enjoy when there's a family history of these machines like yours. Well, the father part anyway; the sister part, not so much.

Honza, Bagged,

Did you bring these home yet?

I picked this 8" table saw from CL early this morning... the price was right. It has an appropriate 3450 rpm motor (a nice one too), two extensions, fence, miter guide, dado insert.
Torr, you have more options.

Someone beat me too it. What annoys me is the person never even bothered to respond to me rather just marked the ad sold. Oh well, there will be more but I really want to upgrade to a floor mount base and column.

As I said (not very good) picture of my mobility option.

This is great.....thanks for the pic! This will take care of my mobility issues with my Craftsman/Emerson DP.

I was digging through a bucket of wrenches at the flea this weekend and this popped up. It's the smaller of the lock levers for the Craftsman press. I don't need it for my press, but if someone is looking for one, let me know. It's missing the set screw.

You're killing me Smalls!

I was able to start pulling apart the saw I picked up from the neighbor. Sure enough, the tilt gearing was jacked up. I can't wait to see what you've got for me.

Re: dp#41

Throughout the King-Seeley era, there were quite a few accessories made for these classic drill presses.

Some are relatively common:
  • mortising attachment
  • hold-down guide/fence
  • spindle attachments
  • drill press vises

Some are less common:
  • Multi-Speed Attachment
  • Vari-Slo ('53-'69)
  • table lift (Atlas-made; '41-'60)
  • x-y tables

I don't often use the term "rare" unless it refers to steak, but there are a couple accessories where, imo, rare does apply.

One is this Atlas-made drill press radial arm, which, afaik, was shown in the '41 to '49 catalogs. I've never seen one of these.

41155041484_e91c1d505e_o.jpg

Another is this drill press cover. It was only shown in the '53 to '56 catalogs.

41120667084_0ea414c8e1_o.jpg

There is a picture of one on VM, but it was heavily modified presumably to use with a Vari-Slo accessory.

I've never seen one of these either.... until today. Earlier this week, I saw this Craftsman 100 on craigslist.

So I made the 100 mile round trip to Brownstown Twp and brought home dp#41.

The drill press itself has a couple minor issues. The knurled nuts on the feed stop were replaced with hex nuts and the spring is just a little wonky on the tang end, but it will still work fine.

The motor date code is K4 52. I believe the motor, head frame and belt cover are original. The belt cover has very nice original paint. Because they were protected by the belt cover, the head frame trim and the oval badge are surperb!

The table is not the original tilting version and was originally power bronze.
Wow that is awesome. Not quite as good as the deal I sent you but close. Now your going to have to paint your dp to match...

Hey guys, hoping someone might be able to help me out with some info. I have a 103.23120 13 1/2" drill press I've been working on. It came with a Jacobs 6426 keyless chuck. I'm not a huge fan of the keyless model and would like to replace it with a standard chuck. I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction for a replacement. I've trolled Ebay, but I'm not really sure what model I should be looking for. The manual on VM says a Jacob's 33 chuck, but the spindle on mine doesn't look to have a taper. It's more or less straight with a flattened spot for the Allen screw on the keyless chuck. Would I have to replace the spindle too? Any help would be appreciated.

Great find Frank!

Thanks guys.

LoL! Yeah, I should have jumped on that deal but I'm short on funds at the moment!

I would be a player at $75 tops...more like $50. That thing is rough as I have had a few of these that where rough [emoji23]

I agree that $125 is high for the condition. Whether it's worth that depends on supply and demand in your region, how much you need one and how much work you want to do.

This one is near me and similarly overpriced:

Interesting situation...

The Jacobs 6426 chuck is a 5/8" straight hole mount. There is a Jacobs keyed chuck that should work. Here's one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/182801668445

I wonder how a straight mount affects runout. Did you/can you measure runout with your keyless chuck?

Please post some pictures.

It doesn't look that rough IMHO. It looks complete, no arc of shame, badges intact, probably the original motor.

It looks dirty and has surface rust but I'll take complete/original over dirty any day!!

FrankLee, you are a life saver man! I haven't checked the run out since the initial rebuild (replaced all the bearings). The drill press has been hanging out in the basement for the last year waiting for me to finish other projects. I did order that chuck, so I'll stop back with run out measurements for both once it's delivered.

Hello all! Second time post, probably in the wrong spot, but I'll give be it a go anyway. Can u guys help me identify this drill press? Most importantly what is on the top of it. It's looks like the vari-slo deal, but I'm not sure. Please advise. Love this site!

Thanks for the opinions. I actually went to see the drill press this morning. I'm a sucker for original paint and this had surface rust all over and any paint was gone. Not the end of the world, but definitely a project which I don't have time for right now . The seller was firm on the price, so I ended up walking away a bit disappointed, but I think I made the right call and will take time to find something in better shape.

Not a vari-slo, but a home-made contraption. That motor shaft extension almost makes my **** pucker, and the whole thing looks crude. If you buy the DP, you would likely remove that **** and need to search for a multi-step pulley to match the spindle pulley---and it won't be cheap. Good Luck!

motox4evr, I'm not exactly sure what's going on there. But it almost looks like someone set it up to run another piece of equipment with the same motor. I didn't see a belt going to the spindle pulley in your pictures. Also it looks like someone drilled a hole in the center of the face of the head for a power cord?:headscrat

Moto, I think that is effectively like a varislow, and I'm sure the top pulley adjusts its diameter as you traverse the thing. If not stupid $$, it could be a good deal, and with some rework a good setup

As for the long motor shaft extension, that could be considerably shortened if not eliminated by moving the motor North. Lots of space on the motor mount plate.

If not to far away, at least go look and see how it works and take pics.

I just purchased this pretty little Craftsman 100 (model 103.24311) for my sister who is a handcraft jewelry maker. It has already been restored with new bearing and paint job, so I don't anticipate having to do a thing but transport it to her.

I'm looking for the operating instructions manual for it. Anyone have one or have an online link to one? Vintage Machines doesn't have it. And Google search is not coming up with anything.
