Thanks so much for the info in this thread.
I just picked up a beautiful old Craftsman off of Facebook Marketplace this evening. The previous owner had already went through and refinished the machine. I'm looking forward to learning a bit more about my new machine and hopefully finding a couple missing pieces to finish up the restoration

Looks like it could have a factory motor and those help sometimes when dating. Look for a number maybe letter combination STAMPED on the motor plate.

dp#82

Just picked this up today trying to figure out the model?

Welcome!

The model number plate should be on the base near the column. It may be difficult to see because of the repaint. The model number will be 103.23140 or 103.23141. I'm not sure if anyone has deciphered the difference between those two models.

Because the feed handle hub and other parts are painted and not chrome plated, your machine was manufactured in '52 or '53.

3/15/2020

I bought dp#82 this morning. It's a first-gen Emerson Craftsman 150, model 113.24511.
It's got a few issues, but nothing insurmountable. The return spring is wonky and the lock screw on the feed stop collar is broken. The base was repainted black and there is a relatively large dent/scrape on the left trim panel.

It didn't take long to get the head frame dismantled.

3/21/2020

dp#82 is coming along slowly, but nicely.

3/22/2020

I was finally able to pull the column from the base. I also cleaned and waxed the table, reassembled the motor mount, and cleaned various other small parts.

3/23/2020

All bearings were repacked and the quill/spindle assembly and the spindle pulley assembly were both reassembled.

3/26/2020

Refurb is complete.

another cross-section cutaway

I've been trying to stay busy during this period of social-distancing, self-monitoring, self-isolation, self-quarantine, etc. My wife and I are feeling good and hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.

Here's my latest project... another cross-section cutaway. It's much cleaner than my earlier version. All major components are fubar, so I didn't have to ruin any good parts. I hope you find it helpful.

FrankLee I have yet to have the time to take mine apart. I find your cut away photos a great help in understanding what's ahead when I do.

Franklee- great idea on the cut away. Reminds me of the old cut aways that auto manufacturers used to do with their engines when they introduced new engines or drive trains. Nice work

Re: The Classic Craftsman 100/150 Drill Press

Hey, guys. I saw this 150 for sale and am wondering if it’s a decent deal. It’s about an hour drive from me. Looks to be a good amount of rust. Seller says it runs well. I’ve never torn one down and rebuilt one these before and don’t have much experience doing that, so a little uncertain about getting it. Is there anything I should be looking at before I purchase it? Seller wants $75.

Thanks.

The first post has a handy index to find the relevant information. Just look for bent or broken parts.

Looks like a deal to me!

Finished a complete tear down cleaning on this 150. Original paint on this one. Added a new power cord and toggle switch to the 1/4hp Westinghouse motor. Going to list it for sale once the corona virus stuff is over.

True. Found out it a full size model. No can do. Need a bench top. I’m so limited on floor space right now.

What’s your current garage setup right now? You maybe able to set it up where it doesn’t take up any more room than a benchtop. Sneaking the foot under a cabinet, etc.

Na, I’d better pass. If I had to make room for anything on the floor it would be a band saw. I’d get more use from that. I’ll hold out until I find a bench top model. Would love to have one of those. They are works of art.

Hey Frank Just wanted to say thanks for the recommendation for the Grez-off - WOW is all I can say! Outstanding results! and we were cleaning CAR Parts VERY impressed!

An ask: the directions say to rinse it off - Needed in your experience? or just easier?

Yeah, Grez-Off is great stuff! Since April 2019, I've ordered eight 32 oz spray bottles. My last order was a gallon jug. I wish I had discovered it much earlier.

For my purposes, I think a rinse is needed. I also frequently soak and scrub parts with liquid Bar Keepers Friend after G-O to remove light rust from painted surfaces. I apply wax to the painted cast iron pieces and don't want dried cleaners on parts.

In warmer weather, I take larger CI machine parts to the self car wash, spray them down with G-O scrub and rinse them off with high pressure. That helps especially with inside head frames and other hard to reach places on parts.

In colder weather, I use the shop sink on lightly soiled pieces like dp tables and bench bases. For nasty greasy pieces, I'll take them outside, spray them with G-O, scrub and dump a bucket of water on them. I've got to clean the head frame casting from dp#82 today using this technique.

I too love Grez Off thanks to this thread and just bought the gallon refill myself.

As for the Zud or Bar Keepers Friend, the main ingredient is Oxalic Acid... has anyone considered buying oxalic acid and adding water to make a paste? $19 for 5lbs of it on amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0147JPQAI/?tag=atomicindus08-20

That's an interesting idea. I never thought about using pure oxalic acid.

Your post prompted me to look for the percent of OA used in BKF. The closest I could find is that the BKF cleanser powder has about 8% OA, while their other products have 2-3%.

I'm not sure what amount of pure OA would be safe for painted surfaces.

For a while now, I have been using pure Citric Acid for de-rusting parts. I find that it works better than vinegar, and just as well as Evaporust, but much, much cheaper.

I always keep CA in a sealed bucket. The only downside of CA I've discovered is that after it's mixed/used, it can't sit around for too long (~3 weeks) or a mold starts growing on the surface.

Re: The Classic Craftsman 100/150 Drill Press

I’ve been using LA Awesome as a degreaser and I’m have been pleased. It’s at the dollar store so it’s dirt cheap.

Use it in the ultrasonic cleaner and it works great as well.

Here are some 100 year old bearings I cleaned up with it.

If you are near an urban, one can find an industrial chemical supply...

Just FYI for all...

Citric acid is WAY cheaper in bulk like 40 lb bags or so.

We used a bunch to etch a 1,200 ft slab in enclosed building, worked it wearing flip flops, feet soaked for hours, no damage to feet, best part NO noxious fumes like Muriatic.

It is possible it is not as aggresive as Muriatic, maybe we mixed a higher dilution I dunno, but worked good for us.

Don't know why it is not more widely used on slabs, maybe not as aggressive.

Thx Frank! I noticed the "Biodegradable" on the bottle (I'm sure the grease is less so...), So I was thinking so. We have a new kitchen sink, so I'l need to get off my **** and setup the shop sink I have as an outside sink...
