Thanks so much. One quick tap (from the correct direction) and the bearing popped out. I'm in Holland.

Re: The Classic Craftsman 100/150 Drill Press

I have a question about the quill on these little guys.

Not much holding them together, a slide on collar on the top and a screw on collar on the bottom.

How much play do you leave for the spindle to spin freely? Seems like the too much to me but otherwise the fiber washers will just get torn up with friction.

Here is a tease pic of the press so far.
Nice job. It's coming along nicely

It's all together now. Just fine tuning at this point. 4534cada450b64a002117d7e676ce6a2.jpg

Here is a question. What would you pay for a Mohawk floor model 103.0304? I see 103.0303/5 fairly often, missing parts for $50-$75. Never seen the floor model.

Just wondering.

For me, quite a bit. It has been a Unicorn Item for me for a while. The head is the same, check the base to make sure nobody just put a bench model on a longer pile. For me, I wouldnt be as worried about the head, as I could simply swap my known good head onto it.

Well I paid 30 and sold for 90.
Yeah. Intent is a huge factor.

Shoot I got about $500 into my floor model. Spindle pulley was worn, needed the depth stop, put on a middle pulley, and added the table lift.

Was the $500 invested worth it, hell yes.

Is there a way to separate the pulley from the spindle?

What is the model number of your machine?

There is a link in the first post of this thread titled "Spindle Pulley Assembly" that explains how to remove the assembly.

If your question is not answered there, please reply again.

I don't have the actual model number but I know when i looked it up that it was an "80"

I did read that section and quite a few others before posting. I appreciate all the info you have put out on these.

I haven't removed mine yet but it appears that the spindle and pulley are cast as one part.. is that correct?

Yes. The pulley and splined pulley shaft are one piece on the 80, 100 and 150. The spindle slides through the pulley shaft with the chuck attached at the bottom.

Earlier pre-war Atlas made machines and later '70 Emerson machines have separate pulley and pulley shafts. The correct shaft part names are "spindle pulley sleeve" for Atlas and "pulley insert" for Emerson.

Thanks

I really want the pulley on the spindle to match the pulley on the motor but the idea of using my band saw and lathe on a piece that can't be replaced scares me.

Not sure what you are referring to with regards to matching...

The spindle pulley has built in splines in it, which makes the spindle rotate. The motor pulley is a smooth bore with a keyway, as it fits onto a motor. If you mean that they should both be just a pulley and not a shaft...not sure why that would matter. Otherwise, they aren't matching on the inside, so why care about an "extension" on one?

I don't have a pulley for the motor. I can't find a matching pulley that would have the same steps and diameters as the spindle pulley so each speed change would require a belt change. I may buy identical pulleys and just machine the spindle to accept it.

Ah, that makes more sense. I know that people have had a tough time finding new pullies that match the steps. Have you tried ebay for a CM motor pulley?

If you have to make a pulley, why wouldn't you make one that matches the one that already exists? Your statement makes no sense.

Not sure I understand
1. it seems no matter what pulley set you have/use - there is only one speed per set of pulley steps so a belt change is always required to change speeds?

2. The spindle splines are integral to the drive system - are you suggesting you would machine the female splines into a smooth bore pulley?

I may be completely missing the thought process - if so I apologize

I think he means he also has to adjust the belt tighter also, with each speed change?:pimpflash

I wasn't going to make a pulley, I was going turn the end of the spindle down to accept an aftermarket pulley (basically just a shaft at that point). That won't work though as most pulleys have a 5/8 ID and the splined shaft measures 1/2". I could go thicker and bore the hole on a pulley but its just not worth that much hassle.

1. If the diameters are not matched each speed change would require me to readjust the tension as opposed to just moving the belt to the next step on the pulley. It might be close enough that i don't need to so maybe i'm just overthinking it.

2. No i was just going to turn down the spindle to accept a readily available pulley. I certainly don't have the equipment to add internal splines

This drill press popped up 20 min away & for the right price - I had to get it! It’s not in great shape, but it’s got a Vari-Slo attachment! 23dc2ff1e645108d85b2817bf9d949c1.jpg

Nice!

There's not much in SE MI. There are two plain floor standers nearby me that are $350 each! I don't ask that much on a refurb'd machine.

5/21 update: the gray 150 is now $300; still too much.

Hi

I find this thread as I don't know a lot about drill press in general and just accidentally get a 100 series (103.24810) as my first drill press due its sturdy looking! But it turned out not a such good purchase as it wobble a bit on the drill bit

Long story short. Went through manyof posts in this helpful thread and realized that the spindle is not installed properly. It misses the threaded thrust collar, and all the rubber rings and washer etc that is mentioned in the "spindle pre load" section.

What option do I have for the missing collar? wait for a donar to show up? Ebay seems have the upper collar available. I am not sure if I can used that as lower collar, as I understand that the threaded portion is not that important.

Thanks

Many older machines require some work to get them into good condition. The spindle on mine was cracked just above the taper, so as soon as I get my lathe back together, I will be making a new spindle.

The collar is nothing special, so if you know a machinist, they can make one very easily. Otherwise, yes, watch for used ones on Ebay, or watch for somebody parting one out. The upper collar is held on with a grub screw, while IIRC, the lower was held on by a blind pin.

Welcome! Hopefully, we can help you get your machine running again.

It's very unusual that the thrust collar and other parts are missing. That makes me think the spindle was bent, the previous owner attempted to repair it and gave up.

When you can, please post some photos of the spindle, chuck, etc.

Thanks Frank for the welcome. I believe(or hope) it is the latter. The drill works but just wobbles a tiny bit(less than 1/16 inch?, I don' have the runout gauge). Here is photo of spindle assembly (attached).

The quill is stuck in the wrong location, presumable because the lower bearing cannot get passed the pin through hole in the spindle.

Just want to point out that I get one more of the possible problems you summarized for the spindle, a point set screw that comes from the upper collar:beer:
