Hello,

I was wondering if Craftsman ever made extra deep sockets. I found one tonight and it is 4-1/2" deep! I have never see one like this before.

Does anyone have any info on the set?

I have a 10 mm that is noticeably longer then my regular deep 3/8 socket. Picked it up maybe 15-17 years ago. Local sears had a basket of deep sockets on clearance for 1.00 each. Broke at the time and only needed a 10mm, didn't notice till later it was deeper and don't recall the hang card saying anything either.

13/16 has me thinking it's a spark plug socket, not from a whole set that long. Perhaps just a 5/8 and 9/16 exist that long out in the wild.

I could be wrong though.

That's a spark plug socket from a set, it has the hole for the cross bar in it.

Scratch that, the hole is in the open end...:dunno:

Thats it on ebay, it is by far the longest spark plug socket I own. I thought it was a unique tool.

Thanks for all the responses.

nine4gmc's post brings up a curious point. Does anyone have any guesses as to why there's a hole on the open end? It's on the wrong end to be used for a cross bar.

It's definitely meant to be there as it's on both the OP's and the ebay listing. I just can't imagine what for.

I think that is a lug nut socket. Sears used to sell a "Lug Nut Magazine" that held 5 lug nuts in either 3/4" or 13/16" size. It was meant to be used with an electric impact or "hand wrench" that was a 4-way wrench with 1/2" drive on two short opposite ends and plastic knobs on two longer opposite ends.

The socket had a rubber band looking thing on the open end, probably to prevent wheel damage with the electric impact. The holes probably helped hold it on.

It's in my 1959ish Craftsman Hand Tools catalog page 11, lower right. Part number is 9 M 4278 and state the size, 3/4 or 13/16. I don't see it in my 1966 Craftsman catalog.

Cool socket
It would be cool to know more about it
Here's what I know after tinkering a bit. The 3/4" (RED) did not have a spring/retainer balls/ or guide. The 13/16" one happened to have 2 springs,2 retainer balls and 2 guides. I suspect the springs would grow weak over time. The guide in the 13/16" will not fit in the 3/4" socket. The rubber rings on the outside retain the 1/4" balls which keep the guide inside the socket, but I assume gently slide out of the way for the lug nuts. I don't have any conventional old style lug nuts to drop in and test whether the spring will push the last one out or not. I'll give some thought to how to acquire/fabricate the guide for the 3/4 socket. I'll also have to root around for some 1/4" ball bearings ,although these do not seem like hard steel/stainless steel. I did do the disassembly inside of a clear bag as to not thrust parts into the great unknown.
