Craftsman floor jack ?

my trusty 3 ton jack is getting on my nerves. the jack itself works perfectly considering it's ten years old. the problem is with the handle. it won't stay in the upright position anymore. the spring that holds it upright snapped. has anyone had this problem and repaired it? I really want to take care of this, I'm tired of tripping over it when I'm walking around the car and I forget that it's there.

I can source most of the springs, If you have a picture that would be helpfull. I will need the length of the spring arms, Spring inside diamter, Total width. I believe that is all i need.

sorry it's taken so long. here is what I've come up with.

I.D.: .670

spring arm length: 2" or slightly under that. I measured this from the tip of the arm to where it meet the spring and starts to curl.

thickness: 1.106" this was measured from outside to outside.

LMK if you can still help me out.

When the same thing happened to my Dad's jack, I bent one up for him out of carbon steel (it won't last long, but it's better than nothing). You don't have to be all that exact; 5 minutes on the vice and a few trials to tweak it will probably get you back in business for a while.

I thought about this a while back but it just makes me nervous. I do restorations out of my garage and I would hate that thing to go while I'm not watching and damage something with fresh paint or new sheet metal. since it broke I've put the jack in the furthest corner of the garage and make do with the other one I have.

Check the measurements and go to Mcmaster Carr and look for torsion springs. Each side is different so make sure you get the correct one.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm going to measure mine tonight and order one. My craftsman 3 Ton did the same thing :-( Been driving me crazy for a while now.

There was no picture for the spring, but the site listed two. a Torsion and Handle. I bought both, and the Torsion spring is the correct one that replaces the one mentioned in this thread.

Exact part number for the spring is 950115-25

Thanks big time from me! Mine broke a couple year ago and its has been parked against the wall for a couple years because of it. The jack is a great jack and works great. I have owned it for over 10 years and have never added a drop of oil or had any issue with it.

I have that same jack, and it only lifts part way. I guess I ned to add oil? I have never seen any leakage or puddles from it? what type and how much? Thanks.

General rule of thumb is to pull the Fill plug and add oil till it rest's above the inner cylinder or aprox 3/16"- 5/16" below the fill hole.


Oh.. And always add Oil with the jack completely Down.

Sorry, correction, the TORSION is the correct one, not HANDLE. The Handle one is a long skiny spring that goes under the lifting arm (I guess to pull it down)

I thought you was Backwards on that, BTW thats a great Price on the Torsion spring. You cant buy them that cheap via McMaster Carr etc.. . I ordered 8 myself.

Wow, great find. I had forgot all about this thread. So the part # you posted is the right one for the torsion spring, correct?

Yes, the part number was correct, I just brain farted the names... The name "Handle" makes more sense for something holding the handle up

I looked all over the place back last year, and even gave the measurements to a couple places that make springs. No luck (way to expensive to have someone make it).

Then of course when looking for something else I find them :-/ oh well, I'm happy, because I was actually jack shopping but wanted to make sure I got one that got taller than the 3t I have. That's when I ran across the spring.

Yep it's a whopping $2 I corrected my original post to say Torsion also. I didn't even think to order more than 1, probably because I wasn't sure which spring was the right one and didn't want to buy multiples of the wrong spring.

I've corrected that mistake as well. ***** having to pay $8 in shipping for $8 in parts. Now I'll have spares that will likely outlast the jack

Ya, that was the whole reason I bought both springs because of the lack of image. Its the same spring as pictured in the first page of this thread. its just a torsion spring that has two arms at about 175° angle with slight bends to them. Both arms bend about half way out. One of the arms before the bend has a slight curve to it.

I'm not home right now, and it's already installed on my Jack, but I can take a picture of it when I get home.

Heres an ebay auction stating this craftsman 875.501153 is made in USA. I guess after they scratched "made in China" off the label its no longer an import...Unbelievable!
