my garage door just starting giving me fits. its a craftman 1/2 hp built in 2006. it would not travel at all. i made all the adjustments ie travel force and distance. nothing but a motor trying to turn sound. i disconnected the chain all together so it had no load what so ever. i got it to turn thinking it was moving the door down, but nothing moving in the up position. it stops, and flickers the light indicating there is to much load. there was nothing hooked up to it though. it was not even moving the trolley.

Agreed. Pull the cover so you can see the worm drive and plastic driven gear and I bet you will see the damage. Very common on Craftsman openers when they get a few miles on them

The good news is that's a pretty easy and inexpensive fix. Probably less than $25 for the parts and shipping. I had a Craftsman opener and replaced the gears twice in 17 years.

I just replaced a friend's where the gear that actually drives the chain was broken and just sitting loose on top. I had a spare belt drive unit so I put that in for her. Easier than trying to mess with the old one.
