Craftsman Garage Door opener

Hi Guys
Hey I have not been on here for ages.I'm going through a divorce it's a real
tough go.If any of you have been through it you know all about it.
Anyway a friend of mine has a problem with her Craftsman garage door opener I thought I would try and help her fix it.If you hit the button to open the door the unit on the ceiling just makes a humming noise but the door does not open,the chain does not move.I looked at the top of the unit and the sprocket and chain seem intact.I know this is a very vauge description but so far that;'s all I have to go on.I could really use your help ! Should I post this on another forum on here?

Can you open and close the door manually? it sounds like the door is jammed or is locked.

I've heard that the plastic gears inside the opener unit can strip very easily over time. Might be worth a peek in there.

Is it making an electrical hum, or is it the motor running with out gear contact?
Either way, Rookie2 is probably right unless you're mechanically minded and have lots of time on your hands.

I was stupid and tried to remove the roll pin that held the gear on, it came out hard but was a m-f to get the new one in. I should have taken the unit down and beat the **** out of it on the floor. lol never again !

Take the cover off and check for the stripped gears.
It is pretty common since most people don't re-balance the springs after painting the door and that overloads the gears.
The replacement kit is an easy internet find and comes with good directions and extra parts since it is a "universal" for many different makes/models.
Use what you need and chuck the rest.
Less than an hour job.
You do not have to take the unit down.
The hardest part is staying balanced on the ladder.
(I used a step ladder that is tall enough that I can straddle and sit on the top step.)

The shipping wait time is a good time to work on the springs since the manual opening will remind you of the need.

I'm thinking if what Rookie 2 said about the pin is hard as hell to get out and in maybe I should let a pro do it. I can take the cover off and have a look and see if it is stripped gears but if it's going to take forever to do ,Well.......

Well thanks to all of you for your replies .I will take the cover off and have a look and see what the problem is.It makes a sort of wurring sound,but hey thats like when you take your car to a mechanic and explain a sound they look at you like your nuts.

I will look at it when she hits the button and see what happens.
