Great start to my weekend - Craftsman Gray & Red Toolboxes (long post)

I slept in a bit late this morning. As usual, first thing after getting up and around is to check the local CL ads for tool related stuff I need or am interested in. My usual quick scan before the in-depth one shows an ad for "Craftsman toolbox". I check it. It's a gray & red rolling Craftsman toolbox with a gray & red Craftsman toolbox on top. Both have twelve drawers. It's been posted three hours earlier. Damnit! I call even though I'm usually loathe to call greatly preferring e-mail. The guy says he still has it and that he's at work and won't be off until 4pm. He lives about 60 miles from me. I let him know I have to pick my grandkids up at 4pm for a weekend visit with Nana & Grandpa. I ask if anyone is ahead of me and he says one guy but that he's not sure the guy can meet today. I tell him I am very interested and I'll let him know if I am unable to figure out a way to meet him when he gets off work. This comment is just desperation from me as I've already committed to meet my daughter 50 miles away in another direction at that exact time for the already mentioned grandkids but I just couldn't make myself say "I think I'm going to have to pass". I'm puttering around and I thought to call him back and at least tell him I really want it and I'm willing to come out there later in the evening after I drop my grandkids back at home. He says "I was just about to call you. The other guy isn't that interested and is offering me less than my asking price. Oh by the way, how soon could you get here? I'm heading home now.". OMG! I let him know I was heading for my vehicle immediately and that I could probably be there within an hour. He wanted to know what I was driving because "these are REALLY heavy." He also muttered something about tools which I didn't really understand. I did ask him if these toolboxes were really old and his response was "no, they aren't very old". The whole drive to his place way out in the country I'm thinking these are going to be some recent cheap Craftsman re-issue of their classic gray & red toolboxes. I'm debating whether I buy them if they are just to give to my son-in-law as his first set of toolboxes. Anyway, I arrive. He opens the gate and motions me up the hill to his house and to a shop in the back. Turns out these belonged to his wife's father who died recently. They are legit, original and in fantastic shape. The heavy part besides just these toolboxes when empty are pretty hefty but every drawer is packed with tools and parts. I don't look thru the drawers because I'm thinking he might see something he wants to keep. Know what I mean? Anyway, I've got a little Subaru Forester. He and his offensive linemen sized son get them both loaded with some effort. The rolling toolbox was set backside down in the back of my Subaru. I'm thinking I'll have to remove all the tools & such from that rolling toolbox before trying to get it out if I'm going to have any chance of budging it when I get home. It takes me an hour to unload the smaller toolbox and get it into the garage. I'm looking at the rolling toolbox and trying to figure out what I'm going to do. With it sitting on it's back I'm finding it difficult to even lift the drawers open and attempt to pull the stuff in there out. The first drawer I attempt something falls out and down to the back of the drawer such that now that drawer won't close. I manage to unload that drawer but give that plan the deep-six. I start trying to wrestle it out loaded and actually managed to get it out without doing too much damage. I may have put a very slight crease on the back side as I was sliding down some 2x6s, Lots of tools and stuff in there. Mostly stuff I don't already have - 3/4" Craftsman 18" breaker bar with 10" extension, appx 16" 3/4" Craftsman rachet with a set of sockets, bearing pullers, Victor torches, half a shoe box of Craftsman, Plomb, Proto, etc sockets, old Craftsman multimeter, a like new still in the box Lufkin Chrome-clad tape measure, lots and lots of other stuff, and things I have no idea what they do or are. If there's interest I'll be happy to post pics of the tools after the grandkids are gone. You might be wondering what I had to pay. He was asking $100. I never had a thought of offering a penny less. We were both happy. Fyi, this guy used to manage a number of Dale's Auto Parts stores here in the Central Texas area. So he had a pretty good idea what was going on. He just wanted to get rid of this stuff and already had most of it already.

I'd be very interested in knowing dates on this toolbox. I know it's earlier than 1984 as there was a receipt in there for another tool purchase with an '84 date on it. I also could you some advise on how to get the drawers out as I need to get whatever it was that dropped in the back out so I can get that out and check for anything else that may have dropped in there.

The toolbox had a number of dirt dauber nests in/on it and what appears like a 1/4" circle of light rust on the back side of the top box. It also has the previous owner's last name stenciled on the sides of both boxes. I can live with that. I'll get it cleaned up good next week. If anyone wants pics let me know and I'll be happy to post them after it's cleaned up.

What a great way to start a weekend - Craftsman gray & red toolboxes filled with old tools and the rest of the time with the grandkids!

Hope you enjoyed my adventure half as much as I did! Wow! How lucky that the stars aligned for me today. :0)

Thanks, Mike

Thanks Corndoggeh.

In the security drawer, I also found the original paperworkdocumentation for the toolbox from Craftsman. Sadly, the original receipt wasn't there with it. That would have been really cool.

Great Score! Just the 3/4" drive stuff should be worth $100,not to mention the torch set.I used to live in Austin and remember Dales Auto Parts.

I've been here since '81 and I remembered them too. Not sure when they sold out to the big stores. The guy mentioned to me that I could probably sell some of the tools and come out ahead. Clearly, he just didn't want to bother with it. Heck, the 8" gear puller is worth about what I paid for the whole enchilada. I don't know anything about welding or torches so I'm not sure what that's worth. I do know I've always wanted to learn how to weld.

The key codes are LL64 and LL125. Thanks!

Those drawers are easy to remove, just slide a flat blade screwdriver behind that clip and pry out a little. Don't pry t hard and break the clip!

PS you ****!

You got an incredible deal. Both boxes are the biggest in the series and most difficult to acquire. I would have paid $150 for the bottom box alone!

Post some pictures of the tools you acquired!

Thanks Brian. Right place, right time. I didn't realize these were the biggest in the series but sure happy with them and happy to hear that.

I'll post pics early next week after I've had a chance to really go through them. Definitely going to need some help in identifying some of them.

Here's an advertisement for your boxes. I think your boxes were made between 1962 & 1975 (I have seen no information on the exact years the 12 drawer boxes were made and can only make a guess based on the color scheme and when it was used). Most likely the latter half of those dates.

The manufacturing dates are located as follows:

- Top box.
Open the lid and look down inside where the tray sits. Now move your eyes to the lower/left corner. There will be a 4 digit code stamped in it that represents the month/year of manufacture (EG: 01 70 = January 1970).

- Bottom box.
With all drawers closed, look at the front of the box. Now look to the bottom/right corner, just below the bottom drawer and just above the right wheel. Same story as before. 4 digit code, etc.

Looking forward to more pictures!

I have yet to see those exact boxes (12 drawer top & Bottom) in person. Although my experience is only anecdotal, I consider them to be rare.

Congrats on an amazing find!

Brian

A screwdriver can easily do damage to the clip in the hands of someone who has not removed these clips before. I would suggest making a drawer slide removal tool of your own.

Get an old hack saw blade and grind all the teeth off. Next, put a 30 degree bend on one end placing the crease about 3/4 of an inch down from the end.

Once you have your tool ready, just slide the tool in and create a ramp for the catch to ride over.

This sounds complex but once you figure it out, you will be able to pop drawers out in you sleep. There are several YouTube videos that show you the exact procedure above.

This guy does a good job of showing you how to do this. Nevermind the fact that he is using a Snap-On box.

BTW, you ****. Great score.

You are lucky, those are the early clips that do not require tools. Grab the little folded tab at the end, with your finger and lift it enough to swing the clip to either side of the hole. The drawer will now slide out. Later clips that are still available from Sears, Waterloo and even ebay, that will replace what you have, have eliminated that little tab and you need a screw driver to lift it. Be careful with them. They tend to break.

Re: Great start to my weekend - Craftsman Gray & Red Toolboxes (long post)

I got all the drawers out with no damage easy peasy. Thanks for all the info! I'm going to clean the rolling toolbox and chest up tomorrow. Anyone had experience with different cleaners and what I can use that will absolutely not damage the original paint? There were quite a few dirt dauber nests in the chest. I've knocked those out while vacuuming and I figure a little water and scrubbing will get rid of those. The top tray and the tool tray in the chest are the only ones with any oil or grease grime. I was thinking of using Simple Green but I've got it in my mind that with enough elbow grease that'll take the paint off. Thoughts? Experience? Recommendations?

I'd also like to hit the slides with a little lubrication of some kind when I put them back in place. What would y'all recommend?

Thanks!

I had great luck with lostakey.net in getting a replacement key for my '64 Craftsman chest here within the last couple months. Highly recommended.

Just punch in your lock code in the search bar! Super easy.

Re: Great start to my weekend - Craftsman Gray & Red Toolboxes (long post)

Update on the manufacture date for the rolling toolbox and top chest: Both were manufactured 01 76.

Update on replacement keys: After checking out some of the sites that offer replacement keys for Craftsman and other toolboxes I called Waterloo Industries who made these boxes. They still make Craftsman toolboxes and they have replacement keys. Price is $4.90 per key with a $3 shipping charge which is lower than the other rates I found. Also, I asked about her confidence level that the keys would work on my older Craftsman toolbox and the response was "100%". If they don't I was told to call her back and she'd refund my money and get the keys shipped back to them. Fyi, the contact number at Waterloo Industries for replacement keys & parts is 1-800-833-4405.

Simple Green can damage paint if you use it full strength and leave it sit on the surface too long, but if you're just spraying it on, rubbing a bit with a rag or paper towel, and then rinsing it off you should be okay. It's my favorite cleaner, it usually doesn't take that much to get things clean.

As mentioned, both toolboxes were full to the brim with tools. Here are pics of the cutting torch stuff. I can't find a brand name on the cutting torch itself but the part with the handle has a model # of CA270-V. The part that fits between that and the hoses has a model # of WH270FC-V. Anyone have any idea on the value of this stuff?

Heck of a deal. And I'm jealous, especially since I missed out on a 60's/70's Snap-On stack yesterday for the same price, no tools though.

Do most of you guys use toolbox liners to protect the drawers and if so what brand do you like and why? Never mind...I found several toolbox liner threads. :)

It's tough when you miss out on deals like that timbitca.

I don't even know you. But I know you are a lucky SOB. I busted my tail to make a little brother to those boxes look that great. You ****. I tried my best to save the 1965 calander that was stuck under the lid. Made a couple of my own drawer clips. Mine came with a combo lock. Locksmith figured it for free

Home Depot does have the best liners. I use the husky 18"x100" black. They work great, have had a great experience with them so far, and only paid $10 for the roll! Congrats on a great find!!!

Yeah I checked them out based on advice from another post above. Seems like good material and the price was right. I figure I'll need two rolls to do all the drawers in both the chest and the rolling toolbox. So I got two at HD yesterday. Hope to have it all cleaned up and done tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!

No problem! Glad to be of help! I think it took me about 1 roll plus a couple feet to do my 9 drawer roller cabinet. Probably take me the rest of the roll to do the top 10 drawer top box but I got 3 rolls just in case. My other two boxes (9 drawer cabinet and 6 drawer top) I finished in carpet square material. Nice stuff but I wish I would've went with the black Home Depot stuff first cuz the stuff I have in the drawers doesn't slide around at all, as opposed to the carpet which will let all but the heaviest hammer slide.

Best of luck! Look forward to seeing more pics!

Re: Great start to my weekend - Craftsman Gray & Red Toolboxes (long post)

I finally got my tool chest and rolling tool box cleaned up and ready to go. I used the Husky brand liner material in every drawer. It took 3 full rolls and if I want to do the top of the chest I'll have to buy a fourth. There was some light to moderate rust in the bottoms of both toolboxes. I decided to deal with it by using a wire wheel, wire brushes and sandpaper then using some Rustoleum Hammered gray paint on the bottoms to deter further rusting. It should last my lifetime and probably my son's who will get it some day. Hopefully, a long long time from now. :)

There are a very few light rust spots on the outsides of both boxes which I'll just keep an eye on and may eventually restore the whole shooting match but I think it's good enough for now. I think they look pretty good for 40+ year old toolboxes.

PS
I have gone through all the tools and parts that were in them. I think I'll post a different thread for that. I will definitely need some advice on what some of them are.

Those are sweet! Thanks for showing them. It's nice to know they actually exist outside of the catalog! They are, and probably forever will be, on my want list.

Oh...forgot to include these. They were in the top middle chest drawer. Really cool. The postcard sized "ready to package" inspection notice and the security drawer info along with the tool chest and toolbox information sheet. The envelope for ordering personalized name plates directly from Waterloo Industries and the postcard for ordering the "Free 1975/76 Power and Hand Tool Catalog" was tucked inside the folded toolbox/tool chest info sheet. Nice!

Awesome tool boxes. You gotta love when the owners of the boxes keep all the original paperwork and managed not to lose they keys. Looks like they were well cared for and now has a new owner that will do the same.

Thanks hika.

I knew there was something else I wanted to mention. Keys weren't with it but Waterloo Industries still has the key patterns and sent me a set of new keys. They worked just fine. I also bought a backup pair. I think I mentioned the contact number earlier in the thread for those needing old Craftsman toolbox keys. They are more reasonably priced than others I checked. Shipping would have been less than $3 but is waived if you buy two or more keys. Each key was $4.90 + tax.
