If this has been talked about before, would appreciate a link to the thread.

My Craftsman 3\8s impact had the keeper ring that holds the socket on get buggered up and I finally had to take it off completely. Ever since it was new, I struggled getting sockets on and off of the impact because of the keeper ring (I'm sure it must have a proper name). Now I have to be very careful with it as there is nothing that holds the tool I'm using onto the impact wrench.

Is there a place to purchase a replacement ring for the tool? And secondly are problems with this ring common on Craftsman impacts (or all impacts overall) or did I just get a lemon?

Putting on chrome sockets and attachments will do that. Some tool truck dealers have them in stock,Most Matco and Cornwell tool dealers are this way.Check the anvil too where the socket attaches on,wear out every two years and replace if needed. The clip is a real pita to get on without the special pliers and there is way to do it without the special pliers.Put the clip on a piece of 2x4,push down on the impact moving it around and the new clip will go in place.Clean the groove out before doing this.

I found mine on Ebay, but also recently found the local hardware/tool store actually carries them. There was a guy in TX that sold me the clip and o ring on Ebay for pretty cheap, bought a bunch for spares.

Yes,Get a bunch of spares. Very handy to have them in stock. To install slip O ring on. Set new clip on the bench and push anvil onto clip. It will snap right on. Dont attempt to try to spread the clip. Or you will buggger it up.

I'll plead guilty to the frequent use of chrome sockets with it... Didn't know this was a symptom of that. I've got a pretty decent set of impact sockets, I just don't keep them with my regular sockets and forget I have them most of the time. I'll try to make a better habit of using them instead.

I"ll get the model number off of the impact and check out the links above this afternoon.

Thanks, you guys are the best.

i HATE those clips! i stuck a short extension on my impact and left it there. i don't use my impact constantly and don't see a reason to invest in a set of impact sockets.

The special pliers are in Cornwell's catalog.Chrome sockets including attachments can shatter when used on an impact and I have been told of this happening a lot.The older Craftsman Pro impacts are the same as an IR.I have put in IR anvils in Craftsman pro impact wrenches and they do fit.Once in a while, the bushing has to be changed.

If you have a high output impact gun, you will see a reason to use impact sockets.

Tooltopia currently has the pliers on sale:

any air tool service/repair shop can fix it. I had a MAC with the ring busted, so I called IR to find a local shop. it costs $1.50 and the guy at the counter showed me how to put it on without using any tools, pretty cool.

I get them from my Matco dealer and the last one he gave me for free,a clip and an o ring.I get my IR parts from him too and also keeps the anvils in stock.Have not ruined one since I use impact sockets and impact attachments now on my impacts.
