Craftsman Intermediate Drawer

About a year ago, I bought the Craftsman Griplatch 40" 14 drawer lower chest. I'm satisfied with the chest, but I would like to have one full-width drawer for several long items and to hold all of my sockets in a single drawer.

I now see that Sears has the Craftsman 40" Wide 1-Drawer Ball-Bearing Griplatch Middle Chest on sale for $182. It has gotten OK reviews so I'm thinking about getting one, but before I do, I wanted to see if anyone on GJ has this single full-width middle chest and any comments you may have.

I have not seen it in person, but before you buy, make sure the bottom is not oil canning excessively. That wide/deep it takes either bracing or thicker material (preferably both) to support the weight.

Its made with the same technology. If you like your grip-latch that you have now I don't see why you wouldn't like the 40". The only thing different is its a wider drawer so it might feel slightly more flimsy.

I have had that drawer on one of my roll-arounds for about 8 years now and it seems to work fine, although I'm only a home shop guy so it doesn't get used every day.

There is no bracing on the underside but it seems to hold the weight ok. That drawer is my messy pliers drawer.

The drawer below it is the top drawer on the roll-cab and it is the same drawer as the one in the intermediate, and it houses some of my sockets.

I have one and the drawer bottom is just flat. You might get some deflection if loaded up with all sockets or other heavy stuff, but not enought to matter.

My drawer only came with one set of drawer slides. The drawer and cabinet is punched out for another set. I did add the second set and it makes a big difference on how it feels and side to side wobble.

If you do end up getting one, PM me, I think I have an extra set of slides that will fit.

I don't think you will find another 40" one drawer in this price range and it is typical grip latch build.

It should work fine, but I wouldn't loaded too heavy, as in a socket drawer. Just use it for long stuff that don't fit in other drawers. The ones I have seen are single slides and are only rated 70 lbs. If you have enough sockets to fill that, I'm pretty sure you would exceed that. Also if you are not putting a top chest on it, bolt it down!

And I mean looked everywhere. The local sears grand is going out of business and has a black one. If the price gets low enough I'm tempted to buy it and paint it red

Yeah, I've noticed that too ... the black finish boxes are always the ones on sale, not the red or red/black.

They are all sold out and on back order. And I have talked to multiple people and it looks like they aren't making anymore.
