Just bought an older Craftsman 103.23141 DP and need some insight into Craftsman Vari-Slo operation. The drill does change speeds when I move speed lever during operation, but it seems to be accomplishing this using belt slipping (belts don’t move up/dn pulleys as I would have guessed). And the slip is most noticeable at slow speed (~300rpm metal drill speeds should not be slipping this much should they? I can stop the chuck by hand).

The drill was unused for 15 years and may be way out of adjustments. Anyone with A Craftsman/King Seeley with Vari-Slo willing to share their knowledge would be very helpful.

Also, do you lube motor bearings & how? Motor spins fine but I can hear the bearings.

Any other tips of things to do on an old drill would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

mrbreezeet1, thanks - that is exactly the mechanism I have. The pulleys are spinning freely, but I do not see any obvious up down motion. I have no problem disassembling the mechanism (reverse of install instructions). I just want to know what a functioning mechanism should behave like before I go taking things apart.
