Hello.. I recently purchased a Craftsman King Seeley 150 drill press floor model and just wanted to confirm that the column only has a plug on top and the bottom of the column remains hollow. It appears that way as well in the parts diagram
Thanks... Loved this blog.. learned a lot.

Although machines were made much stronger in the old days, I've never heard of a drill press with a solid column.

No the column is hollow.. I was just asking if there was supposed to be a plug at both ends vs just the top of column..

I have brought a handful of those drill presses home. None of my 150s/15 Inch presses have a cap on top. One of the two 13" presses i brought home has a cap. I don't know if they were included with all presses but, one out of five indicates to me they were likely to get lost.

As to top and bottom, I have no clue. What does the parts list say?

Interesting.. So if you had only one side capped would you use it for the top or the bottom? Is there a thought process suggesting one side vs the other?
Thanks

Hey there

The columns are welded and then machined smooth on the outside. The inside is rough with a weld seam except for the top, which is bored smooth a couple inches or so down to allow the center pulley to be added if desired. The cap is only for the top, to protect that bore ID and to stop sawdust and **** from falling down into the column. No need to cap the bottom.

The cap is only on the top of the post. The post is machined to handle the jack-shaft assembly.
