Craftsman King Seely 150 Drill Press Chuck

Hello all.

Reaching out again as this group has been super helpful. I have a Craftsman King Seely 150 drill press with a Jacobs 633C chuck. I have pretty significant runout on this and need to remove the chuck.

I thought the way to remove the chuck was with the wedges pictured however the center of those does not fit around it. Do I need a spanner wrench and twist it off? Any videos or tips on how to remove would be great.

Yes, a pin spanner is needed.

Loosen the collar with a pin spanner and unthread the collar down to the chuck.

Then continue to unthread the collar with the pin spanner until it forces the chuck loose from the taper. It could take a bit of force.

Continue to unthread the collar by hand until the chuck is free.

The sleeves in the lift look like Zamac also- is that why they are hard to get out? Well, my swag is that they were greased at the factory. Over the last 50 to 80 years, dirt and that grease solidified and cemented them in place. It is very common even with the steel cylinders.

To get the chuck back on, do I just tap it back on from underneath?

No, no tapping.

Insert the Taper shank of the chuck into the Taper recess in the Quill. Put a block of wood on the drill press table and then use the Quill feed handle/lever and gently feed the Quill down and thus push the chuck taper shank gently but firmly and STRAIGHT into the Taper recess in the Quill.

Trying to tap a Taper shank into a Taper recess rarely gets things straight. And thus the Taper never seats properly and then the chuck falls out of the quill.
