Good evening, I’m trying to find an image of the original ad for this Craftsman carpenter’s box or what I believe to be a carpenter’s box. I haven’t been able to find a single ad, sales post nothing. I’d like to find out the production year and cost at the time. A few in my Facebook craftsman group said they either have several or seen them but not one can produce a picture of the box they claim to own. This is common on Facebook, for whatever reason people will claim to have something they definitely do not. Anyways if anyone has any info on it I’d be much obliged. It’s a “ long C “ logo, two leather handles and I believe it’s 30” long. It also has a tray. Thank you

Here's 2 catalog images. First one from 1943. The image is a Dunlap box but if you look in the print below it lists a Craftsman-branded box, 32 inches long with "extra handle". Second pic is from 45, pictures the Craftsman box with the leather handle on one end however it's wearing the then new Heritage badge. I have the pre-war version but won't post a pic just because I love irony.

You can find an entire thread dedicated to pre-war Craftsman here: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/threads/show-your-long-c-craftsman.376433/

Nice research, JoCo. The printed 1943 listing is no doubt the box in question. Odd that they didn’t show the box. When did the heritage label carpenter’s box switch to a steel handle?

By the way, a Dunlap box like the one shown was the start of my Dunlap collection. Added previous owner hasp and missing handle. Paid $2.00 at the Tahoe flea in 2016.IMG_0694.jpegIMG_4426.jpegIMG_1822.jpeg

I am thinking it (OP) is more like the first ad. All of the carpenters boxes, like what Don posted, have the cutout for a framing square to stick out if needed. Can't see it in the '45 ad, but it could also easily be artistic liberty. The OP box does not have the reinforced cutout.

Don, not sure when the handles switched, can try and do a deep dive later if I get time.

Not sure Don but your box is 49 or later due to the 3 horizontal ridges. Nice Dunlap box! I've yet to bring home a Dunlap box of any kind.
