Greetings!

I’m in the process of restoring a vintage Craftsman band saw and have started with the motor, a 115 7446.

I disassembled it, cleaned and painted and installed new bearings. Now on startup it hums and strains for a second before spooling up to speed.

It wouldn’t be normal for me to not have at least one problem on the restoration of one of these motors. This is this first non capacitor one I’ve done.

Thanks for any guidance from those that have gone before.

Jeff

It sounds like the centrifugal switch is not closed at startup.
Do your new bearings have extended inner races? Spacing of the rotor components is critical.

Update from “The Big Dummy”:

It’s really amazing how well things work when you reassemble them correctly. In my midnight stupor, I installed the spring washer on the wrong end

Let my experience/inexperience be a lesson to those who think, “I’ll just finish this then get some sleep”.

Thanks FrankLee for once again donning your cape and saving me from my own stupidity.

Be well
Jeff

Hey, it happens. Glad you got it sorted out.

My earlier replies were from my phone, so it was not convenient to search for this post that is very relevant.
