I just found at an Estate sale in Portland, Oregon this unusual 1950's or 1960's Craftsman vise. The vise shows three holes on the top. The one on the moveable jaw is not threaded. The two holes on the fixed jaw are threaded. I would like to know what the purpose was. I thought it might be for some accessory like a anvil that could be mounted on the top of the jaws. It might be a Gun makers or Jewelers vise? If anyone knows please post your opinion on what the vise might have been designed for. I will try to post a picture with the posting. New to the forum so I hope I get the posting correct.

Your vise is a mechanic's vise. The holes drilled into the top of each jaw are a user modification and not factory. I'd love to know what the previous owner mounted to the top of this vise!

I checked catalogues from 1949 to 1964 and could not find this exact model, but I think you're on the right track for year(s) made. Dunlap is Sear's house brand but is still listed in the Craftsman catalogues.

Feel free to post more pictures and welcome to GJ!

Thanks for copying the pictures over. I'm on my phone it's not easy to do.

I actually just picked one of those up about a month ago. Very cool set up. Not superheavy duty, but it will work fine for small light work.

In addition to pictures in the vise thread, there's a very cool advertisement from the original manufacturer of that vise somewhere on the web. I just can't think of the name right now to find it. I'm on vacation so I can't go out into the shop and look.

There is an ad for this as the Metl-Former attachment in the February 1955 edition of Popular Mechanics for $29.95.
