Sears has the made in USA premium ratchets on sale $42 off, for $125 and some change. Not cheap, but this is the lowest price I've seen for the set. I don't know if a coupon will work in combination with them.

Good deal.
Most promo codes don't work with Hot Buy items. So the price you see there is firm. Though I'm not sure if SYW account coupons have the Hot Buy restriction as well.

Really good deal on those ratchets. If I had not just spent about 500$ on tools here in the past month I would be all over this. And for the record I have the 3/8th premium ratchet and it is great. I just wish they would make a flex head version of these, but hopefully in the future.

Don't hold your breath for USA flex versions. Those ratchets are one of the few things left at Sears still USA. I wouldnt be surprised if they get swapped for Gearwrench 84 or 120 guts in a similar body tomorrow.

Does the gear wrench 120 actually have 120 teeth Im assuming?

Very good deal. This deal doesn't come up very often. I got my set at this price over a year ago.

Is it really that hot of a buy? I think it was on sale for $115 a long time ago. Has any one purchased this set for under $125 in the past?

Well at that price its 42$ a ratchet. and if you priced them out separately The 1/2 drive is 80$ alone, the 3/8 drive is 60$ alone, that 140$ for two of the ratchets is 140$ I think this is a really good deal. But my problem is I just bought the 3/8 for 30$ and just bought a fine tooth snap-on ratchet.

I'd swear I got my set a few years ago on special for $99; but my memory may be wrong. I just remember it was a really good deal. But we've had a whole lot of Ben Bernanke money printing since then.

I got my set for about this price about a little over a year ago and I thought it was a good deal. I think it's going to be pretty rare to find it lower than this price for quite some time, perhaps when they discontinue these ratchets and clear them out will you find them lower.

but then again, there could be a pricing mistake next week and some how some $25 off $100 coupon can apply and you can get them for $100... with sears.com, you just never know what you're gonna get....

http://www.trident-supply.com/mobile/default.aspx#P59755

You can get the GearWrench 4pc. Full-Polish Flex Handle Ratchet Set, 84T for $103.46.

I love the gearwrench 120xp.. have them all. but these craftsman are actually made in USA... $125 is the price we pay to support fellow Americans.

There has been talk on this board that Craftsman may discontinued these ratchets then if yours has a problem you will get a lower quality replacement. If this happens the ratchets are not worth $125.

Clean them occasionally and don't use cheater pipes on them. They'll last you many many years of loyal service. People talk about the necessity of warranty replacements like they break ratchets daily. If you do, you're doing something very wrong.

I can agree with this statement on most hand tools other than ratchets. The problem is when they discontinue rebuild kits. Then you get a new ratchet. Possibly an inferior communist built one

Meh.... "talk on this board" doesn't mean anything as far as what the future holds or the future intentions of a company. As far as I've ever seen, no one from Sears Holding that works in the Craftsman brand department has ever come out and publicly stated what the company's future plans are with the brand or this particular product line. The only people that are even remotely related are those who work at a Sears retail store and they are not likely to be fully aware of the stuff that goes on at corporate. I wouldn't use "talk on this board" as a factor in my purchasing decisions.

As far as the warranty situation and the "possible scenarios", I don't think a products warranty constitutes the majority of the product's "value" to a consumer. I've bought refurbished products with lesser or no warranty simply because it was something I'm likely not to need a warranty or the price was so good I couldn't pass it up.

At the end of the day, how much a product is worth to a particular individual is somewhat of a personal choice. There is inherit value in the utility of a product, but my friends who have never held a wrench in their hands or thought of changing the oil in their car on their own probably see no value in my tool chests full of tools. I own these ratchets, along side many others like Gearwrench 84t, 120XP, Snap-On dual-80, craftsman, HFT stuff ,etc... I've never regretted getting these for $125.

I'll admit, I'm a bit guilty as well, but why the need for so many ratchets? I own an early Cman RP set I bought in the eighties that served me for years by themselves, a Cman USA Thin Profile set that my son gave me for Father's Day a few years ago, and the Gearwrench 120xp 3pc solid and 4pc flex head sets from the recent Trident promotion. The 120xp's are nice, and I especially like the long length of the flex head ratchets, but I'm sure I would have continued on without them just fine. I guess I just got caught up in the big promo hype. Kinda looks like I'm answering my own question here, doesn't it?

Just bought these. Gave me 10% off for using my sears card and i got a $15 back in points code to work(well it said it did, ill see if i get them). After taxes i got them for $119 with free shipping(sywm). The coupon i had was from sywm also. Been wanting these for a long time! They go pretty high on ebay. Could probably buy two sets and sell one on ebay to pay for part of the set i keep.

Edit: $16 in points are already in my account! I know they do that to make you buy more but i would end up buying something else anyway. So thats another $16 in savings! Got them for $104 really.

Are the Craftsman premium ratchets better than the cheaper Gearwrench 120XP ratchets? Please explain.

Better is a subjective term. The GW have more teeth, making them "better". The Craftsman are made in the USA and arguably have an easier warranty, so they are "better" in those aspects.

Both are modern, premium ratchets that should work great for anybody. It all depends what you're looking for!

I have the Craftsman thin profile ratchets. Are the heads of the Craftsman premium ratchets wider than the Craftsman thin profile ratchets?

Ironically, the premium is thinner than the thin profile. Toolguyd has some comparison pictures.

The Gearwrench also comes in many different flavors with flex head and comfort grip, two features I am particularly fond of.

I still prefer the 84T Gearwrench though.

Premium is thinner than the thin profile but is the Premium wider? Modern engine bays are just too tightly packed.

not worth getting it. gearwrench>craftsman in this premium grade type.

I still dont know how those ratchets work...they have two pawls and 60 teeth per pawl???? I have the 3/8th premium ratchet it is wider, but it is immensly easier to break bolts with, also has 84teeth for the tight spaces, I dont think I will ever use a corse ratchet again.

They have two pawls stacked on top of each other that are offset so the pawls engage a 60 tooth mechanism in an alternating order to mimic one pawl engaging a 120 mechanism.

The link below explains it pretty well and has pictures of the insides

All I can 120 xp has been serving me good in all tight spaces. No issues finding at all. But yes I am not happy with mike's trident supply that sent me a set and it has scratches on it the 1/2 drive. I am not gonna lie.

The 84T mechanism in the Premium is the same as the 84T mechanism in the gearwrench ratchets (except made in the USA). That also means that the Premium ratchet is slightly stronger than the 120XP (180% of ASME torque v 190% ASME torque for the 84T).

Still prefer the 120XP however!
