Your striking cap can be in direct contact with the shaft and not have continuity. You could always use a cutoff wheel to make your own cutaway view. :D

Check you tube for a video on how the pry bars are made.

There's probably adhesive holding that cap in place, in which case it's preventing a continuity loop.

I don't have mine in front of me, but isn't the cap chromed/coated with something? Can you get continuity between two different points on the cap itself?

Otherwise it's angle grinder time to see what's up.

Probably during manufacturing, the pieces are pressed together. When the pressure is relieved, the handle expands just a bit to create an air gap.

Can I try?

I think further investigation is warranted before getting up in arms.

Just because two metallic objects are mechanically connected does not necessarily mean they are electrically connected.

I speak from experience. In my industry we get frequent trouble calls for failing circuits where the solution ends up being an insecure mechanical connection or a foreign substance between surfaces that increases resistance. To the eye the surfaces appear to be touching, but they are not making electrical contact.

My point is that your meter may be misleading you. The shaft and endcap may very well be mechanically connected, but not electrically connected. Unless you have access to an xray machine you may need to sacrifice the tool if you want to satisfy your curiosty.

Now that's interesting... you would think they would be made the same. How about posting pics? How did you end up taking it apart without damaging it? Are the end caps the same between the two versions?

Now, do those end caps snap back in place? If not, warranty does not cover wear from normal use, or any problems caused by misuse, abuse, modification or improper maintenance of the tool. Enjoy your broken tool suckers!!!!!

I'm just joking..

Jeremy, hopefully no one from Mayhew is reading about your pry bar tear-down.

Thanks for clarifying the construction of these pry bars.

I realize you are just joking, but nothing is broken at all. The end cap is cast into the plastic handle as a single unit. It stays with the handle when the handle is removed from the shaft. All I did is pop off the handle, look inside the hole and take a few measurements, and then put the handle back on again. My pry bars look and function as if nothing happened.

Interesting. Now, I have some older Mac hard handle pry bars without striking caps that are cracked, chipped, split, etc, because, well, pry bars need to get hammered sometimes. I've always liked the dominator grips and wonder if they would work on the Macs. I brought all my craftsman pro pry bars to my parents house. What size is the bar in the Mayhew/Craftsman?

I am going to warranty all of my Craftsman Professional pry bars for Mayhew pry bars now. :D

How would you do that? Generally they only exchange craftsman for craftsman with a few exceptions in my experiences, but Sears doesn't even carry Mayhew in store. Plus, craftsman pro are made by Mayhew. The only difference would be the name on the handle. No?

Way too much to explain here.

Why not send an email to Mayhew and ask them. My guess is this may be intentional to prevent shocks should you come into contact with an electrical connection.

Well what would be the difference? I'm 99% sure they're the exact same and just now I did a quick Google search to confirm it and found a post of yours from 2012 saying "they're definitely Mayhews". So I don't understand what your reasoning is. I have a hard handle Mayhew and professional craftsman so I can't do an accurate comparison.

My initial thought was it was a "tongue in cheek" comment. notice the :D ... in the initial post?

:dunno:

It is a joke... that is why I put the ( :D ) in there.

They are the same bars, but the reason I made the joke was because he took apart the Mayhew and the Cman Pro pry bars. The Cman Pro had more plastic in it which is why I mentioned that I wanted to do a warranty exchange for the Mayhew bars (which is certainly not possible to do).

Does that clear it up?

I have so many pry bars I don't know what to do with them. I originally bought the craftsman pros and a Mayhew hard handle, then upgraded to the macs.

After posting that though I decided to email Mac and see if they have replacement handles. At the time those hard handle pry bars came out, I don't think they had them with striking caps. A pry must be pursuaded with hammers every now and then. Maybe I'll get lucky and they'll send me some free handles.
