I found this nice 1/2’’ drive ratchet in my grandfather’s toolbox. What is it’s model number? What year? How do I figure out which repair kit to buy if needed?

Check out the link below to the Craftsman ratchet type study. Looks like a type 6. Information regarding your ratchet can be found on page 3.

It's either a 44975 or a 44985 type ratchet. Built like tanks. The ratchet looks to have been rebuilt in that the socket anvil has a push pin indicating Chinese origin. Does yours have the oil port on the head?

If we are talking about the same thing, (the thing that pokes out of the anvil when you press the button), The early Craftsman QR ratchets had them as well until about the mid to late 70s I think.

The ratchet was manufactured in the USA very likely at some point between May, 1967 and 1968. Notice that it has the pointed letter “A” in the CRAFTSMAN stamp. That typically indicates that the tool was manufactured no later that 1968. A closer look at the patent side of the handle includes the words “FORGED IN USA“ not China. In terms of making tools for Sears/Craftsman, China didn’t enter the picture for about another twenty five years. Check out the link below to the Craftsman Teardrop Ratchet Type Study.
