Are the craftsman re-threading kits still sold at sears and Are they still the same kit as the Snap-on one? Want to know because I'm in the market to get one and I remember the topic from 2 years ago seein one and people said they were the same for less than half the cost

Didn't know if they were outsourced to china yet either

Kastar not Lang was my first thought but then saw Lang now owns Kastar.

It's a good quality kit, I've had one for a couple of years and love it.

I think it was right around $55 at sears at the time or $100 if you bought it off the truck.

I just bought a new re threading set to replace mine that got legs. I bought mine from Mc Master Carr . Jawco model 1853 made in U.S.A. cost 114.87. Mc Master #25325A14 . I don't care who rebrands them and sells them for more . My original set served me well for many years with perfect performance.Ken.

The Craftsman set I bought carries a full warranty. I've never had a problem with warranty on a set item. Sears usually opens a set to get me what I need or replaces the whole set.

Well here is a side by side comparison of the two

Snap on

Craftsman

Hmmm...no doubt in my mind it's the same kit!!
I'll go see tomorrow if sears has it and I'll grab one and take pics and post em.
Like I said....if I ever have trouble with one or two pieces in the set....I'll replace them with the snap-on brand piece that way I'll never have an issue again with that same piece as it will have the snap on warranty and I will still be way ahead of the game as far as money spent
Only problem it won't have the snap on logo on the case.....ohh ge willickers!!

I don't believe your going to find a 48 pc set at your local Sears.

40 pc. Tap and Die Set, Master Re-threader - Online or In Store -

I am pretty sure sears will not warranty them, Snap On will for sure. As always, Snap On is the warranty.

Packaging says lifetime warranty right on it.

Here's the 48 piece set I bought a few months back. It's blurry in the pic but if you zoom in you can see it says lifetime warranty right under the list of parts on the left side.

Btw you gave to order the 48 piece set online it's not available in stores from what I could tell.

EDIT - here's a close up of the packaging

I've never had an issue warranting any tools with sears. Walk in, show them the broken tool, they throw it in a box and grab me a new one off the shelf.

Ok so I was at sears today and like someone else said on here, the 48 piece was not in the store. They only had the 40 piece for $59.99
I asked them about the 48 piece and they looked it up and said it's online purchase only and they ordered it online for me and are shipping it to my house for free!! Can't complain about that
Also the 48 piece has 8 more pieces which the 8 more I figured out is all metric additions which is definetely a bonus because that will be used more so it's worth it
Cool thing is the 48 piece showed up as $49.99!!!!!!
Cheaper than the 40!!!!!

Regardless of the packaging, they are not covered by the warranty. Here is the website:

http://www.craftsman.com/cswarranty/nb-100000000227082#point3

"If this Craftsman hand tool ever fails to provide complete satisfaction, it will be repaired or replaced free of charge. This warranty does not cover the taps and dies, which are expendable parts that can wear out from normal use within the warranty period.*"

The written package would superseed what it says online... especially if you purchased it in store.

I just got back from getting the 40-piece set (Damn this site is always making me buy more tools!) :)

Well, the only warrant information on the outside of the package is this...
and it says "Forever Warranty" - there's no indication of any exclusions, no indication that there is any modification to it...

And after you purchase it and inside the box is this insert that modifies the warranty...

I think you'd have a pretty good case to get them to cover this under the "Forever Warranty" because it's the only visible warranty information on the package. What they're doing is saying it's "Forever Warranty" and when you purchase it finding out "oh, we're were just kidding around about the Forever Warranty" - seems like a pretty dirty trick to me.

I had sort of a warranty/cust service issue with these.

It's been a few years but the set was either missing a piece or two or had double of something and none of something else.

It took about a month all together and several calls to the store.

The store was having trouble getting the missing part. Word was the manager kept calling wherever they get parts and couldn't get a return call. They wound up ordering in a complete set then robbing my missing piece and sending the rest back.

Not many companies will warranty wear and tear items. That is why people pay big dollars for Snap On, they will warranty almost anything for the life of the owner (except air tools and tool boxes). The "forever warranty" is just a catch phrase that the PR department made up. There are lots of exclusions, as a consumer, you need to look for those exclusions prior to purchase. Remember consumers vote with their dollars.

Not a dumb question at all. I've never used one either, so I'm interested in knowing the answer too.

You find the right threads per inch side of the file (or threads per mm) that matches your male threaded part, and use that to file 90 degrees to the threads to restore smashed threads. Best used for large diameter male threads like the ends of CV joint axles.

You should probably read through Craftsman's warranty. There are not lots of exclusions, and they will cover certain wear and tear items, such as this one.
