Would any Craftsman enthusiast be able to give me a likely age on this piece of kit. Also how good a quality were they. There seems to be some really nice machinist chests on here that look pretty well made. Thanks

Craftsman's Heritage logo was in use approx. between 1945-1958. The picture is kind of small so it's hard to see the details of the handles. Another member may have a better idea of it's age, but I'd place it in the mid-50's.

look behind the logo on the third drawer. There will be a date code stamped in it. It think they're just two digits. It was stamped from the front side, so it will be reversed when you're looking at it. You might try a mirror and a light. It was made by Advertising Metal Display Co of Chicago for Sears. They later made Remline boxes and boxes for Ward's. I have the same box and its from 1957. It looks like yours has been repainted. They were originally a gray/green hammertone.

Jacked72 thanks for the information. I don't have it myself but was wondering if it was worth a 1 hour trip as someone has it for sale. That is the only photo in the ad and it does not come out on my I pad very well. It looks as though that the bottom is a deep drawer with a missing handle that once had a lock. Is that what yours has ?. Thanks

There are 3 drawers and an open section at the very bottom...

Its just a lock on the bottom. There is no handle. Attached is a picture of mine I had on the phone. The bottom cover isn't closed, but it will give you a better idea of what it is. Although the old Sears ad gives the dimensions, its roughly about 26" across and 16 or 18" deep. It took a lot of time to repaint as it was in about the shape of the one on the top. The hammertone paint hides a lot of defects.

As to whether its worth driving for an hour each way...I looked for about a year to get mine and I had the choice of one. It was $75. In terms of quality, its better than most of what you could buy today at the hardware stores.
