Drop the final 0 for the model No.; so 5181. 506 = Columbian as the MFG. at least 1960-73, except somewhere in those years, (later...) they moved production to Japan with a 391 prefix.

THANKS!!! I found my Model #5183 5" machinist's vise in the 1945 catalogue. Been trying to find out what year it was since I bought it. I really like this vise. Thanks again! Great thread. It's 7 years older than I am !!!!!

Thanks for posting this. I have been meaning to post question about an old Craftsman I have. It is from 1948-1959 according to your catalogs, and the model number is99T (or C or K) 05176 or 015170. Based on when the older gentleman bought his Lincoln welder, I assume around 1962. How do I determine the manufacturer?

Pics might help, but we have only ID'ed a few manufacturers. some by features common to the MFG, and some by the 3 digit model no. Prefix. The ones we are certain of are in the posts.

Sorry, I forgot to include the picture. Looks like the vise on the left. I thought it was a 3 1/2" but it is 4".

We've not ID'ed that one, but it seems to me one or more with the inverted "U" slide appeared in the vise thread, and was a likely candidate for the MFG.

Thanks. Whoever made it, it is a heavy sucker. Guess I'll get some gray paint and freshen it up.

After refreshing my latest find, a Prentiss Bull Dog, I decided to clean up the little Craftsman 506.51800. It will now serve light duty for the rest of its life.

I came across this vise by accident in north Jersey in 1989. I've used the pictures in this thread and by looking at the very minor design changes in the pictures, I'm guessing this one was made in the 1960s. If anyone knows more about the exact year, please let me know.

Happy Easter, everyone.

I picked up a 4" Craftsman NO. 506-51830 vise.

I understand that Columbia made vises for Sears and after a scan of the thread, I wasn't able to find an exact match for this guy.

I also looked through several Sears CM Tool Catalogs and found a 4" 5183L in 1969. It looks like a very close match, except for the handle.

I'd appreciate any feedback/information about this Crown Top vise.

That needs posted in the main "Vises of GJ" thread. That is unique to the Catalogs I've had access, to, and may be unique even in the vises thread, although I think I've sees a Vise posted with a similar hex slid. so that may get you the manufacturer. If I had to guess at age I'd say Pre WWII.

If you are interested in parting with that, I can offer a good trade. I've been wanting a rotating head vise that is not Asian in origin so that would fill the bill.

For Jaws, Honestly your only option is likely to be custom fom KM Scot in the Vise thread.

Unless you are seeing multiple layers of paint, that probably i the original paint. when you take it off the swivel base, you can probably verify that.

Value? If we have not seen one before there is no way to judge. No track record. no Eprey completed to current listings. I couldn't even find Google images... no data. Bottom line; it's worth what someone is willing to pay.

Thanks outlaw
Posed like the add.

Hofferwood, I'm working on a 5169. What's the secret to giving the handle and swivel handle that brushed, matte finish? Did you use a deburring wheel on a bench grinder? Thanks for any advice.

Awesome to see this thread is still active- thanks Outlaw for your work in this thread!! I just stumbled on this after trying to identify a vice I've had for over 20 years. It came from my grandpa and has been an absolute workhorse all my life. As best as I can tell, it appears to be a Craftsman 5242 based on the 1940 catalog page. However, either the "Craftsman" name casting was ground off, or it was never there. Did Dunlap make this same model and use a sticker perhaps? Jaws are 3.5" and it opens just over 4". It weighs in at 20 pounds.

The base is stamped 8V5499:

The jaw has a "2" stamped for some reason:

It sure looks like that model. and I agree the markings appear to be ground off.

Dunlap was a Sears trade name just like Craftsman, so there was not "Dunlap" manufacturer. I have no clue who made these vises for Sears.

A long time searching in the Vices thread might surface it's twin with an OEM's markings. :dunno:

Actually- I did look through that thread and found a 5244 (4" jaw version). All of them have the Craftsman trade name cast in. I'm just going to assume that for whatever odd reason, someone ground it off. This suits me just fine, as ultimately I really just wanted to know who made it. It's a nice vice. Probably much better ones out there, but it's cool to know who made the vice that's served me so well. Thanks again for the info! Especially about Dunlap being a trade name, not a manufacturer. I guess I misunderstood that.

[EDIT]- I stand corrected. I just did a search (instead of scrolling through) and found that there was a Dunlap branded 5244 with the square jawed Craftsman style.

I have a Sears 506-51776 vise that I got in an CL deal a while back. Started cleaning it up and looking at it today. It is missing the swivel base and someone used a large piece of angle iron for a base.

Any idea where I could purchase a base that will fit it? Will other model number bases fit?

Also, it is missing the retaining ring on the acme screw. Can I just use a regular retaining ring or is there something better? It measures 9/16".

Thank you for any help you can provide. I would like to get it back in shape to give to my son.

A few more Craftsman vises for reference sake.

This one is a Craftsman 5216 exposed screw bench vise with 4" wide jaws. It weighs in at 26 lbs so it is a bit bigger than most exposed screw Craftsman vises I have seen. It looks similar to the 1933 swivel base garage vise with anvil as shown at the top of this thread, but it is has 4" jaws instead of 3" and weighs 26 lbs instead of 14 lbs. But it is not quite the same. Makes me wonder how old it really is.

A Craftsman 506.51801 vise with 3.5" wide jaws. I always liked the look of this style vise. This one is in pretty nice shape.

Dunlap 506.51770 vise with 3.5" jaws. Seems like this is probably 1960's vintage.

I have a 5230 and it has several holes on top of the jaws. Are they suppose to be there? I'll post pictures as soon as I get my son to sleep for his nap.

Here are the pics of the vise I mentioned above. I'm not sure what those holes are for, but the ones on the ends are threaded. thanks for your input.
