Somewhere during my tool aquistion adventures I picked a single chrome plated Craftsman 3/8" drive 12 point 7/16" semi-deepwell socket. It has no markings on it other than Craftsman Made In USA 7/16. No maunfacturing code or Sears item number. It is about midway in length between the standard and regular deepwell 7/16" sockets. I wasn't aware Craftsman made semi-deepwell sockets but this is proof. I don't have any old Craftsman tool catalogs so can anyone tell me when these were made? I'd like to pick up a full set as this one has proven to be a handy addition to my tool box. Thanks in advance.

I have a set of metrics. 9-19mm. They use to make Mid Well sockets but discontinued them to my knowledge.

Semi-deep sockets are awesome! I generally grab one before the short or deep.

Sets come up in the classifieds from time to time. I think its the same user that has a stock pile of NOS tools.

I have a set of SAE ones. I'd love to find the matching Metric set.

I have never thought about what semi deep sockets would be used for that a shallow or deep socket couldn't do?

Depending with what make you work with you might never need them or might save you a headache. Removing the AC compressor from a 08 Pontiac g6 with a 3.9 you will love this socket. The alignment stud is 2 1/4 in away from the frame with a crank pulley below it. A deep socket will not fit in this location and a short depending on what brand will be too short to engage the nut.

Mmmm I have a set of metric and SAE. Was looking for a set and stumbled on them so I jumped.

The midlengths fit where the deep is too tall for the space given, but the faster is on a long bolt that bottoms out a sallow socket. A wrench is an option for this scenario depending on the angles you have to work with and the torque that must be used on the fastener. Removing the center console on my truck is the most recent place I needed a mid length socket and prompted me to look/buy.

Like all tools, if you work on different stuff everyday, you always run into something where what you have won't get it done.

I have found numerous occasions where a Mid Well socket was the only thing that would work.

i havent seen any new stock for a long time, and had heard that they were discontinued.

i bought a couple sets back in late 90's -early '00's.

most of my 3/8" dr CM deep sockets are really longer compared to other brands.
