Finished this up today. The case is an inconspicuous central hardware socket box.

Just some cheap sockets? Wrong.

Insert made from mdf, bottom has felt, top has foam to keep all In place. With that style selector on the rat, would that place it somewhere from late 60's to early 70's?

refer to Lauver's list:

Craftsman Hand Tool Manufacturers & Date Ranges

http://www.thegaragegazette.com/index.php?topic=867.0

other features on the ratchet which are indicators of age:
part number/no part number stamped on tool
oil hole/no oil hole on head of ratchet
pointy "A"/flat-topped "A" on "CrAftsman"

(* sorry I can never remember date ranges on those... somebody else here will know. *)

Thanks for the info. It is marked -v- so according to the list it is looks to be from 1970 to 1975.

I won't swear to it, but I believe GJ member Ganymede stated in another thread that they went from the pointy "A" to the flat-top "A" about 1970.

again, somebody more well-versed on Craftsman would be able to confirm that. I'm not an expert about anything here. ;)

Perhaps earlier . My rhft with patent pending and no model # has a flat top a.

That is an excellent idea, those boxes are much nicer then the tools they contained. I may have to keep the next one I find and make a small 1/4" travel kit.

Thanks. Feel free to use this idea. I got quite a shock when I saw the C-Man set in the crappy degraded plastic holder from the original set that the box was sold with. Another shock was he only wanted $7 for it (Craftsman around the area are very popular and people like to charge $$ for them).

For one reason or another, this just reminded me that I need to dig out the 1/4" Crafstman set I bought last year or the year before and add the RHFT ratchet and matching breaker bar I bought at yard sales and make it "complete" even though not all parts are likely to match.

I like it! Much handier than having a loose set of tools; keeps them from getting lost.
