Craftsman bandsaw speed reducer 113.238961

I had this posted in General Tools and with no responses, thought I'd try over here. Maybe I'm asking the question wrong, but wanted to see if other members are using this reducer on different model Craftsman band saws?

"I recently acquired a Craftsman 113.238961 reducer and wondered what Craftsman band saws some of you may be using it on? I know it will fit a 113.243300, 113.243310 and a 113.243311. If you would care to share other model numbers you are using the speed reducer on I would appreciate it. Also, whether what you are using is a plug and play, or whether you had to fab up some sort of mounting bracket (s)?

I want to pick up a used Craftsman and use the reducer, but don't want to end up with something that won't work. I only plan to use it for occasional light metal work and no wood at all.

Thanks in advance for your input."

A few thoughts. You are asking the right question but 1) I suspect the speed reducers are not very common on Craftsman bandsaws, and 2) posting pictures helps as folks are more likely to comment on an item they recognize than stop to look up a mystery part number. It might also help to mention 'bandsaw' in the title. I assumed you were talking drill press until I read your question. There is considerable excitement every time someone locates a Craftsman drill press with a slo-speed adapter.

Looking up the bandsaw you highlighted, I suspect it would be interchangeable with a lot of other Craftsman bandsaws through the years. I can't comment on the need for a custom bracket, but the basic bandsaw design appears to have been the same for 30 or 40 years. My grandfather had a non Craftsman speed adjuster modified to fit on his 1960's Craftsman bandsaw. Worked great. He just clamped it to the column that supported the saw with a couple of large U bolts and a piece of wood.

It looks like your speed reducer might mount to the stand. In that case modifying it to mount on another stand should be straight forward. Good luck in your quest. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to proceed in the search for the bandsaw.

Hopefully someone with direct experience will contribute.

thank you for your question on the 113.238961 speed reducer.
the speed reducer was designed for use on a 1725 rpm motor and it will reduce the speed from 2900fpm for wood working to cutting metal to a speed of 135 fpm.
i hope this information will help you.

Thanks for the responses so far. I forgot to mention that I have the manual with the reducer, so I'm aware of it's performance numbers. If I could score one of the model numbers I mentioned above within three hours of me, I would go that route. So far the Craftsman 12" saws that are near me are a different model number, thus my question about whether others had adapted the reducer to them.

I have noticed that when searching for a band saw, many, many times the seller doesn't list a model number which limits the buyer knowledge. Not just with Craftsman, but others as well. If I find what I'm looking for I'll be sure to post something about making it work, how it works and with pictures.

I changed the thread title in the post, but couldn't get it to change on the main "ad".

All other input is still appreciated. Thanks again

What you really need is the size of the back pulley for one of the models listed. All of these have a shaft running from the bottom internal wheel out the back to a pulley that is then attached to the motor. Any model with the same size pulley should perform similarly, or if it has a different pulley size, modifying the pulley that is attached will allow it to perform the same. Otherwise, just know what the models look like from the outside, and then look for those (aka, grey with a white/red label, etc).

The only issue may be mounting the reducer itself in a convenient location on a different saw.

FWIW, the 18" Craftsman I have has a similar setup in the lower cabinet. Except you swap the pulley at the top, not at the motor end.
