From start to finish this is my garage. Unfortunately in Ohio it's very important to keep both my Hummer H3 and VW GLI inside. So I'm in the process of finishing my basement since my man garage isn't big enough for my woodshop.

Obviously I have a thing for Craftsman tools, so there's a theme here. I'm finishing my floor soon with red & black checkerboard. Let me know what you think.

Looks very nice.

As I type this there is a Mr Boss Hoggs screaming in the parking lot at the boars nest. It seems someone stole something from his 1970's caddy.

I just put a 2x4 on the wall with cheap screw in hooks. Works great.

I like it. My only suggestion would be to think twice about a red and black checkerboard floor. It might be a little hard to look at, after a while. In your shoes, I'd think about grey racedeck (or whatever you use) with a red border line of tiles that's set in one or two rows from the wall. Or (similarly) red rectangle lines of tiles where each car parks and grey tiles elsewhere.

I also know I'm in the minority when it comes to checkerboard floors. Other guys seem to like them a lot.

Looks nice. What is the top of the bench, is it just painted?
Thanks,
Tony

Good question, it's actually a printed graphic with a 10mil polycarbonate overlaminate designed for floor use. It has a subtle diamond plate pattern on it and the overlaminate should last for a few years. If not I'll just replace it whenever since I work for the graphics manufacturer. It has 3/4 inch plywood and 1/2 MDO board underneath it. I put the graphic on the doors as well, and a similar graphic is what I used to change the Red Bull fridge into a Craftsman fridge.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll consider your advice after checking out your shop. Wish I had the funds to do something as nicely done as yours!

Yeah, Olsens is nice. I think when your floors done you'll see yours starting to look real good, too. You've got a head start on most people.

Looking good so far. What thickness did you build your cabinets out of?

As far as the floor I'm with Jack on the red and black. I think that the red border would be less busy but still stand out.

Everything but the bench top is either unfinished 2x4, or 1/2 inch mdf. I did it on the cheap, the whole thing was about $200 in materials including the shelves on the other side. I even found the paint as a mistint at HomeDepot for $5 and had them add black until it was dark grey.

Even though I'm a lifelong Indians fan, I'm partial to the Cubs for NL. Niether are any good.

I forget that the ******** craze hasn't made it worldwide yet. If you live in Ohio it's a staple, and everyone in the state has a set it seems.

Hey Yard, I'm a fellow Craftsman aficionado. If you're thinking about putting down the plastic Craftsman floor tiles, I would recommend you steer clear of them. I have had them down for the last three years and I can say from experience that they are a pain in the ***. I banned my wife from parking her H3 in the garage because it tracks in all kinds of sand and salt from the roads. I have had to pull all of the tiles up and clean them and sweep under them each spring. I pulled up a two gallon bucket of sand from under them last spring. If I had to do it over again, I would put down an epoxy floor, gray base with red, black and white chips in it.

Here's a crappy cell phone pic. I'll post a better one tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up Slim. Kind of makes me rethink my black & red checkerboard idea too. Looks cool, but hard on the eyes.
I actually was going to do a graphic floor covering since I can do it for free. The stuff my company makes is pressure sensitive, and can be removed or replaced down the road if I want. And it's extremely durable.
