OK, so I ordered the special club deal for $50 on the set of 3 Craftsman ratchets part number 44992. They were marked as made in the USA (packaging made in china), as did someone else's in the tool deal forum posted. I went to the store and saw the China made ones with an identical part number. Here's my comparison notes:
Both had metal levers and looked identical. The china made ones had smoother nicer quick release buttons. The china made ones had a hole in the bottom where you can see the QR actuation. (fill up with dirt?) The USA ones did not have holes, they were solid on the bottom. My 3/8" had very thin black oxide coating, the other two looked good. There were some light scuff marks on the USA ones that got shipped, whereas the china ones in the store were perfect. The USA ones have a lot of wobble to the square, but I didn't get to check the china ones. If you take out the wobble then I'd say they are close to perfect.
