Hello,

found this site the other evening while looking for toolbox restoration threads on the internet. I recently (like last weekend) finally brought dads tool box home. I know its old as he had it for as long as I can remember. But I cannot find a date on it anywhere. Can anyone tell me a year? The photo attached is not the box in my garage, this one is off of ebay, but the box I have is identical, only covered with years of machine shop grease, grime and grit not to mention tar and nicotine from his workroom.

Thanks

There should be a date stamped inside the top compartment in the lower left corner.
Anyway, that is a beautiful box.

Fuzz,

Welcome aboard.

That style Craftsman logo was used in the late 1960's and early 1970's. That should get you in the ballpark. Some of the Craftsman boxes have date stampings in odd locations like drawer bottoms or inside support members. You may have to disassemble the box and clean it to find the stampings.

I'm fairly sure your tool box was made by Waterloo. They have been a long time OEM for the Craftsman boxes. If this is a Waterloo box as I suspect, follow Old Salvages (post #2 above) advice on locating the date.

When you find the actual date stamping, please post it on this thread. I'm sure other folks with similar boxes would be interested in the date.

That style of box is one of my favorites, and I am always on the lookout for them locally.

Keep us posted on the progress of the box resto.

Mine are of that era. I bought them new in 71-72. Good solid boxes worth cleaning up.

Scooterfish,

Do your boxes have the same logo style as the one's posted above?

And yes, they are very nice and very easy live with. Good solid storage and they don't take up too much floorspace.

Mine dates at Sept. of 1973. I repainted the top many years ago because of scratches and available red paint. Seems like a nicely well built box to me........

An identical box just sold at a local online auction for a lil over $300.00

That was a real purty one, like new according to the auction listing.

Does anyone know where I can get the craftsman emblem for this kind of box, i'm redoing my dad's old silver and red chest, and the emblem is long gone.

they are no longer available. You will have to search ebay or post a wanted ad. If you can find a cheap handbox of the same era, on craigslist, you can pull one off of those.
