Craftsman tool box

I purchased a 52 inch craftsman tool box but haven't picked it up yet.

Seems really nice. I got a good deal on it. Tax and all $1000.33 for both pieces. My question is this a good tool box or would I be better off with a Harbor Freight tool box.

A thousand dollars is the tipping point. It's where you venture off from Harbor Freight, but haven't quite made it to the more expensive units. I don't know if you want new, or you want a nice tool box. New? What you got, or Harbor Freight, you'll most likely be happy with either. Otherwise, perhaps a used Snap On could have been had? The skies the limit with Craigslist and some patience.

I would have exhausted the used route first for truck brand boxes and industrial cabinets. At the $1K range there is quite a bit out there.

If you're happy with your purchase, that is all that matters...Use it, take care of it, and I hope it lasts for decades...

But...

The Harbor Freight roller cabinets are well wroth the money...

I have a 56" Roller bought on sale for $699.99, and I love it...

The HF 72" Roller is on sale for $999.99 about three times a year...as recently as two weeks ago...

(If you're ever in the market for a Tool Cart...you can't beat HF's five drawer...)

I think you made a good decision! You may want to check and see where and who built it. Good job on supporting Sears!

I suggest you keep the slides oiled, paint waxed and get the good, direct fit liners Sears should sell and you should be okay for a while. I have the ~$300 chest/cabinet 26" combo in red/black for 4 years...since 2011.

Its a great box for the price. The premium heavy duty boxes are very nice. The grip latch drawer pulls are nicer than anything at HF. Don't let the HF 44" fan club sway you. The box you bought is better IMHO.

Hard to say without seeing it in person but my guess is, $1k is way too much for what you are going to get? Just my $.02

It does come with a "limited" lifetime warranty versus hfs 90 day warranty. So that is something to also keep in mind. And really if you like it that's all that matters. And if you don't get something else.

My brother in law has that exact box. It's done its job but he hasn't really been all that happy with it. He plans on going to a couple of the HF units

I bought a Craftsman Heavy-Duty series (1 step below the Industrial). I looked at the HF boxes, too. I just like the drawer sizes on the Cman better. My box and I assume the Industrial series, has provisions to adjusts the number/size of drawers. The slides are held in with a rivet. I removed a 4" drawer and added 2- 2" drawers to my top box. Sears Parts Direct sells all the parts. My deeper drawers also have the provisions to add a second slide. The ability to customize the CMAN was a big plus for me.

I think the craftsman box, especially the higher end grip latch models are not as bad as a lot of people on here make them out to be. Yes the low end ones are pretty cheese, but that's the price point. Playing with them in the store, I don't see anything wrong with. My only complaint would be sears has gone to too many really deep drawers which I like a more balanced mixed of drawer depths. If you like the box, I think your fine.

Sears has transitioned their boxes for their customer base. Which is the homeowner not the mechanic. In doing so, they have added larger drawers to fit power tools. Plus fewer drawers is also cheaper. But like I said before, with the ball bearing chests, you can change the drawers. For example, remove 1- 6" and add 2- 3" or remove a 9" and add 1- 3" & 1- 6". Where the slides mount, they are notched every inch or so.

But...

It is always offered at $799.99...

and...

The sale price is $699.99...(That's what I paid for mine...)

The HF 72" can be had for less than $1,250.00---ALL THE TIME!!!

It's a nice box, and if you're happy with it, that's all that really matters. But keep in mind for next time; $1,000.00 + Craigslist + patience can = a LOT of tool box.

I almost bought the same set up, and I still will buy it when my box sells. Again the HF box fans will try to sway you. But your box is USA made and has a lifetime warranty. Has a MUCH better drawer pull system. People here keep unfairly comparing them to the cheap entry level stuff. When in fact the premium HD boxes are a great value. The HF boxes are a great value for sure but the price you paid I believe you have a better box for the money for sure

I have a triple decker ball bearing Craftsmen that I have had for 15 years and it still works great but man is it jam packed. Once I sell my brothers double bay Matco 5S with hutch(been storing it for 2+ years) to make room in my garage I plan to purchase one of the double bay HF units that go on sale frequently. I'll put my 2 smaller Craftsmen sections on top and likely bring the lower to work.

I just bought the premium duty 41" 11 drawer bottom for about half price on sale. I'm pretty glad I did. I was going to buy the heavy duty 9 drawer one for even less but decided on this. It was about $500 for the box on sale. Harbor Freight has great deals but I just prefer the Craftsman stuff. I couldn't afford a used Snap On or Mac box at the time.

Thats a mightly nice box, good job! I would absolutely choose the OPs box over a HF anything, any day of the week. Its cheap for a reason. I make no apologies when I say the HF box is junk. I work out of my tool box professionally and I wouldn't be caught dead working out of that.
