Craftsman Tool Chest Paint

Has anybody ever found an off the shellf touch up paint for Craftsman tool chests? My old red and black chest and roller cabinet are getting a little sad looking from about 25 years of use. I just bought a new roller cabinet and I'd like to get the old ones looking as spiffy as the new one.

I believe they are powder coated these days

Probably are. I haven't picked up the new one yet, so I haven't looked at it.

It would be nice to clean up the old painted ones though.

If there are no dents or major scratches,why not buff it out-I had a MAC box that had a lot of paint overspray on it.I hit it with a medium compound,followed up with some Dupont#7 and gave it a coat of wax.Other than a burn mark at a lap seam,it looked brand new when I was done.

Its beyond that. They're not in bad shape, by any means, but they've gotten scratched in a couple places over the years.

If I have to, I might repaint the whole thing, but that's more work than I want to do.

I used Krylon Cherry Red to paint a small cabinet I picked up. Color match was pretty good. Check it on a test panel and see if you agree.

I painted this with Rustoleum Industrial Enamel (spray bomb), I think it was called Safety Red. They also have black and yellow. It matches pretty close to my tool box and has held up well.

why not sand and fill the chips scuff the entire surface and respray in the color of your shoice with a good quality automotive paint and clearcoat?

I love safety red! Everything I spray red for my shop gets the safety red treament.

Safety red is probably as close to the color of Craftsman tool boxes you'll get with off the shelf paint. When we built our house we had white siding, the black shake style shingles, and black shutters. I'd seen some houses the same colors off and on for years with a red entrance door and thought it looked very classy. I had my painter paint our door red and when we moved in he told me the left over paint was in the garage. And behold the can of front door paint was "safety red". When I built my work benches in my garage I used a industrial gray color but plan on repainting them in saftey red this summer. It's such a nice color.

Some Craftsman boxes are powder-coated, others have a baked enamal finish. Here are two examples:

52" (powder-coat)

40" (baked enamal)

I'm not sure what distinguishes what gets what finish. Size maybe? I thought maybe the professional series were powder-coated and the rest were baked enamal, but look at the link for the powder-coated box, it's not a professional series.
