craftsman toolbox refurb

i bought the box for $15 about $30 in supplies just thought itd be pretty cool to fix up this is my first tool box i dont think the box is old i havent been able to find any stamped dates on it though just a "Made In USA" on top

After took me about 1.5 weeks i fully sanded it down to bare metal and sanded down the rust

I have that box in black in the basement that I bought new in 2006.

I think it is from the 90's, based on the emblem style, IIRC. Jeff, is correct about it being from the homeowner line.


d_frontier. Honestly I think you need a bit more practice. How about I send you a few boxes so you can "practice" and hone your skills?

No seriously, that looks fantastic. Great job What type of paint and application did you use? The last pic at an angle to the front would really show the flaws, of which I can't see any. Again, fantastic job, looks very professionally done. No doubt that you know what you are doing.

looks great, i did a half A$$ job on my dad's old box, looks like i need to go back and do it right.

did you use any tools to help in the job? What color Red is the paint? was it a rattle can?

rustoleum gloss sunrise red , 3 coats of gloss clear, wet sanded with 1500 and 2000 then buffed with meg's ultimate compound and yes it was rattle canned and tools just and orbital sander

I only said older because the current ones are black or gray. I have not seen an all red one in a while.

I've seen them fairly recently, but I personally prefer black drawers and red everything else. So I don't pay much attention to them.

My box is from 2000, it is the traditional red frame with black drawers.
I never liked the homeowner boxes, they always seem too flimsy.
My next purchase is going to be a Kennedy 520 or 526, I keep scouring CL for one.

Maybe white lithium grease? Not sure, sorry!

I refurbed one exactly like this only was top and bottom mine had the bars for the locks and when i bought it from cl the guy looked about 50yo and he said he bought it when he was 20 the only stamp i could find was the USA. on the left side top of the bottom box maybe that gives you an idea of the age anyways i researched quite a bit and the best thing that i found for the slides was dry silicone spray if you can find a product called door eze that's what was said was best

This box has the made in USA right on top dead center. And thank you for the suggestion I will hit up Home Depot and see what I could find
