I went to our local Ace Hardware to replace my 1/4 drive ratchet. What I was told they would not give me a replacement one for the one that was broken. I thought craftsman tools are guaranty for life. I was told I did not buy the ratchet from them, they would not replace it.

My guess is you should call craftsman and see who your local authorized retailer is to deal with that sort of thing. More thank likely it probably only needs a rebuild kit and those are mailed for free from my understanding. If the ratchet is split in half no one will warranty it.

I agree with the others about just replacing it with something else if it's just one of the standard ratchets. Going to a 72+ tooth ratchet will change your world.

Those last 1/4" drive raised panel ratchets were only two grades above the plastic throw-a-way picnic forks and spoons.. Ya; I understand that some people wash and reuse them; however??

+1 on this, if they did replace it they not doing you a favour, buying a better spec 1/4 is easy these days and cheaper than hassle and running around on old brand warranties .
Warranty on low cost tools is generally complete hassle after decade or 2 passes .

The Ace I worked at would swap out Craftsman tools under warranty but only if they carried your model in stock. Being a smaller store they didn't have an extensive variety of Craftsman so some people got turned down. Sometimes for large $$ customers they'd swap out something close and the manager would take his chances getting re-imbursed.

They did you a favor by sending you away. Although the 3/8" and 1/2" RP are crude, they are strong and will get the job done. 1/4" on the other hand...

Ace is probably annoyed, that probably the only craftsman tools going out the door are warranty replacements. (or a five finger discount).

No doubt Lowes will soon feel the same way.

There is an Atwoods that sells Craftsman here, but any warranty they tell people to go to the Sears Hometown store... *rolleyes*

Before SBC bought the Craftsman name, Sears was wheeling & dealing to put Craftsman stuff in any and every little hardware / farm store they could just to try and scrounge up some extra sales.

Contact Ace Hardware corporate. Find out if that's official policy or something the store owner dreamed up.

Post the answer they give you.

My Craftsman 1/4" pear-head ratchet has been with me for forty years. Works fine. No complaints. Something I can't say for the 3/8 and 1/2 RHFTQR models.
