Are the Craftsman Ultimate Collection tools different from their regular tools?

I looked to see which Craftsman we were talking about. Since it is Sears I would hesitate to buy anything from a company that may not see the end of the year. Total liquidation appears to be more likely by the day so maybe you will be able to pick it up for cheap after they fold.

It’s a little sad to me as someone the grew up with Craftsman tools and Sears, but this has been factoring into my purchases lately.

I would be weary as well for the simple fact that Sears won’t be around much longer.

Hand picked what? ****? Their new Chinese supplier isn’t Apex and the quality of the latest Craftsman tools is even worse than the garbage they’ve been peddling for the last 8. The newest Craftsman sockets make Pittsburgh sockets look like Snap On quality.

Do yourself a favor and spend your hard earned money elsewhere. Plenty of brands out there with decent quality tools for a reasonable price and warranty. If you’re hell bent on Craftsman, go to Lowe’s and try out some of their latest offerings.

i'm convinced sears is trying to damage the Craftsman name even further before they disappear.

It appears they are leaving out all the fluff and gimmicks their usual kits offer, offering their most practical mechanic tools. For the sale prices, there is no way you could be getting anything beyond casual DIY quality. The regular prices look grossly inflated and most likely are.

That sounds so much like a tool junky forum dream applied to a mid market retailer needing ANY sales.

I would guess they had a comittee studying the GJ community for a week or so.

I bet no 12 pt sockets and a slew of screwdrivers make it into the shelves.

At this point, I'd buy HF's "pro" line before I bought anything Craftsman. I know that 50% of the people here **** on HF, but they have become much better lately. They were smart enough to see CMan head downhill, so they offer homeowner grade tools (like CMan, Kobalt & Husky) for a much lower price, and easier warranty returns.

"Just buy Snap-On" is really not an option to guys shopping with a CMan budget.

They actually had the 104 piece set here on clearance here so I grabbed it. They’re down substantially from the original cost as it is according to the website. For Chinese (I think, not sure about the ratchets) they don’t seem half bad. Interestingly the wrenches are not lobster claws. The wrenches are probably the nicest Chinese sourced ones I’ve seen since the Companion ones they had years ago. Everything is stamped “Z-AH” as a source, which I don’t think is Apex. The chrome is brighter and the stamping better. One thing I like is it isn’t a bunch of Allen wrenches, it’s just a pretty comprehensive set of sockets.

I mean it’s largely a moot point to post about them but since there weren’t many Sears by the time they came out, and few people appear to ever have bought any I figured a should post about them anyway. I can’t see any specific reason to buy them unless you spot them on clearance (other than it’s a pretty complete set of standard depth sockets), the Sears is closing or something like that. I mean what it has in the set is good in terms of selection if the price is good.

Being winter I probably won’t be using them much until the spring so who knows how many Sears will be left, if they’ll still have any, durability would be a gamble until further testing is done.

Well if anyone was curious I said I wouldn’t be using them for a while so I made a point of using them pretty much exclusively since the weather broke.

For imports they’re actually pretty nice. The SAE set is great if you have lots of small engine and garden equipment. Problem is they jacked the prices up a lot once the lockdowns started and almost none of them ship free for whatever reason (despite being lighter than some sets that are shipping free). The big set without deep sockets but the wrench set is OOS, it may or may never come back. If they back to at price of $1 a piece like they were around the holidays I’d consider them.

These are all the sets they appear to currently have.

The Craftsman name was purchased by Stanley, Black and Decker. It should be around long after Sears is dead. That doesn't mean it will be good though.
