Oh, and for anyone who has the set... are these dual-marked or are they easy-read (laser etched) only?

Hmm... How long ago did you buy yours? Some review seems to indicate they are easy-read only, some say dual marked?

I ordered mine January 2010. They were dual marked.
Craftsman ditched the laser etched after too many complaints sometime before that.

all the recent reviews will tell you dual marked. because they no longer make the laser etched only sockets. the 4 sets i've bought were in 2011 and 2012 i think.. and all were dual marked.

Has anyone gotten one that can comment definitively on if they are dual marked, and COO?

In case it is interesting to someone, I have a spreadsheet of the sizes, and Armstrong part numbers for sizes left out of the craftsman set. If there's a "1" in the box, there's a craftsman socket for that size. If it's "A-(number)" then the number after the "A" is the armstrong part number (useful if you intend to fill in that gap).

Yes, I read above, but at the rate Craftsman is going to China, up to the minute information is preferred.

Does anybody know if this goes on sale during Black Friday or the holidays?

Well, it was just the "Deal Heist" yesterday. I had my wife order for me at $379. While that's not the lowest price I've ever seen them, it was enough for me to bite.

I was hoping somebody posted it yesterday since I forgot, but I guess not. Sorry guys!

I bought this set last summer for around the $379 mark. Glad they were all USA made and after inventorying I was missing two small sockets which was no big deal since I just replaced them with two sockets I had in another set. Been very happy with them so far.

Does Sears do an email alert for the deal heist?

You should have just called the number on the socket list and they will send out the missing sockets. In the sets I have ordered, there has always been something missing and they have taken care of the missing pieces.

I figured I would have seen this set go on sale over the holidays or during January. Did I just miss it or what?

I bought this set 2 years ago for around $260. USA made. The chrome finish is not very good/consistent. In fact the harbor freight sockets have a better finish. I should say better looking finish. Not sure on durability. For the price i am happy with them and like the fact they are USA made.

I was missing around 4 sockets. I called the number on the sheet included with the kit which is APEX, told the guy the part numbers i was missing, 5 days later i had box with the missing sockets. Doesn't get any easier.

And yes, they are dual marked.

It's sold at the Sears Outlet for $279.99 as "reconditioned" - whatever that means.

Unfortunately, the one on Sears Outlet is in Fort Collins, CO and they won't ship it -- pickup only. I think "reconditioned" means it was returned as is missing a few sockets. Still, I'd probably snag it anyway if it were closer or shippable.

Thanks for checking into that though!

These sets do not appear to have
1. the 18 (3/8" drive) mid-depth sockets (not made any more)
2. the 42 flex sockets
3. the 2 flex spark-plug sockets
4. the 7 piece external torx sockets
5. the 6 spark plug (padded) sockets

Might as well add impact sockets, 3/4" sockets, etc to the missing list.

And then we may as well add the wrench sockets (actually pretty handy) and the universal sockets as well.

I forgot about the wrench sockets. How many are there?

There is a 8pc SAE (outlet has them right now) and there was a metric(7 pc?) set as well, but I haven't seen them in a long long time in set. You can find them individually sometimes. There is a Sears appliance center by my house that often sells NOS and random discontinued sets that used to have a bunch of them. I wish I would have bought them, because I use the socket caps fairly often and these wrench sockets offer and even lower profile.

The universal sockets??? Is that really chrome?

No, they are a matte finish. Actually, I like the design of them because of the knurling. That's one thing i like about the SO is when you're trying to finish unthreading a bolt by hand with just the socket.

What I want to know is who has the Craftsman 96PC Ultimate Bit Socket Set.

Not me, still. I've talked myself out them 100 times. I have a problem in that I get semi obsessed about having entire complete sets of things even though I know most of them I'll never used. Trying to break myself of this, haha, since I already have most of what I'd ever use from this set. Same with the ultimate 299pc set for that matter, just that there are a few holes and some are laser, some not, some dual. I want a complete uniform set at home, and then I'll put the rest into a set for the trailer and/or road box.
