It seems like a screwdriver with sockets. Basically the same thing as knurling on an extension.

Basically a bastardized bit driver, nut driver set up with the pass through gimmick. The shank that is front and center goes in the handle and then the socket goes on that. The shank itself is a little thicker than a 3/8" extension so it is a bulky set up, but like i said keeps the kids/wife/borrowers away from the good stuff. Also comes with a case so if you get it cheap enough you can use it as a wedge if you have a drawer of other cases flopping around.

I got one to throw in the trunk of each car with the understanding that it won;'t have the socket size I need when I need it, but may have the right screwdriver bit.

I have a cutaway socket for those, I want to say made by Hazet? You could make one from a 6 point deep socket and a die grinder too...

Subaru struts (all models) are the same way. I have a pass through set just for them!

Pass through is good. But the universal sockets.... not so much. Plus as a nut driver most of the past through uses above won't work.

When in a pinch, I use a spark plug socket held with wrench, and pass a hex key through the opening to get to the strut top.

IIRC the VW strut nut is 22mm... a 13/16 would probably work for a 21mm but not 22mm

It has probably been 10 years since I've done VW struts though. Used to be a regular occurrance until I got smart and stopped buying cheap Boge struts and used Koni Yellows on all my cars. (and then old GTIs and Sciroccos stopped being cheap used cars and actually became collectible...)

I'm not sure what size the nut is on a Mk3 but a 13/16 is actually almost too big to work but it does.

I'm not as familiar with earlier VWs but I know some of the platforms like Mk2 and Sciroccos used a special strut tool that looks like a long, hollow hex that has 2 nubs to lock into a castle nut(?). I've seen the tool (I have one actually) but it isn't needed on anything '93 or above so I really don't know it's proper use.

With the availability of cheap coilovers these days, no one wants to pay the premium for a quality name like Koni or Bilstien anymore. The only thing the majority wants is "moar low".

The one thing they do pay a premium on these days are rare, period correct parts. If you have any of your old aftermarket or OEM stuff around sell it during tax return season and watch the kids go wild!

Some additional information. I got them for the passthru ability only.


They are exactly the same design as the Gearwrench pass thru sets. So you can use the extension & driver on the gearwrench sockets, and vice versa. In my opinion, that made the $9 price OK.


And yes, the gearwrench sockets were much nicer quality.

So the GW stuff will fit the nutdriver extension from the Craftmsan set? I don't have either but may consider this set if other pass throughs are compatible.

What is a "universal" socket?

Basically it's a spline socket, supposed to work on 6 point and 12 point, square, and external torx fasteners. Of course it's a jack of all trades/master of none situation, but if you're using them with the included nutdriver handle I doubt you'll put enough torque into it to round anything. Best use I've found for "universal" sockets is gripping fasteners that are already partially rounded and you don't care about damaging them further, just getting them out.
