Hey folks, first post here just signed up.

I found a craftsman tap and die set made in USA, grey plastic box identical to a kromedge set but has no foil sticker on box to know for sure that it's kromedge.

They do not say HS or HSS but neither does the known kromedge sets.

Not sure what I have here without maybe trying to scratch the plating? Thanks!

That's what mine look like, but a larger set. Perhaps that one is older/cheaper? I'd definitely jump on it if you need a set. :)

Edit: Looked at the pics and see what you mean. The label went on the obvious spot on the lid, and that is the only place the word "Kromedge" appears. HTH

Just picked it up for $20 off of good ol' craigslist, just don't want to get in trouble with carbon if that's what they are.

I have the same box. It has two trays inside, but the layout of the trays are different than yours. That said, my box is a crowntop Craftsman logo with Kromedge clearly labeled, all in red ink.

Catalog number is 9-5209.

Is there a significant difference in vintage Craftsman Tap&Die sets ie Chromedge vs ?

I was under the impression that anything stamped USA and Craftsman was generally a good buy.

But if you are looking for specific vintage or makes as a collector..... im no use.

Sounds like mine, only mine is 9-52091.

Mine are all stamped VM as the series/OEM. Maybe this will help you tell if yours is the same OEM as the Kromedge?

I've got one similar to yours, only with a printed top, no label. Got this many years ago maybe 1970.

5209 and 52091 had round, split adjustable dies. Your set has hex shaped dies. It is most likely a 5201, 41 piece, SAE Kromedge set made from 1965 to 1983. In the mid 70s they stated using a black plastic case of the same design and later used a hard, all one piece case with a clear plastic lid. Your set is from 65 to approximately 75.
