I picked up these sockets at a pawn shop today. Anyone have any idea how old they are? They don’t say “Made in USA”, only “Craftsman, (Size), =V=.”. I can tell, they were hardly ever used. They sat in someones garage for years and years, their corroded and full of spider webs. I wire brushed most of them, and I want to find a way to polish them to make them seem like new. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I use an air impact wrench to spin the sockets, and hold the sockets with steel wool to clean them up. Use an adapter to get down to 3/8 or 1/4.

I bought my set back in 1972 when I was a farm equipment mechanic. I have not used them much since then.

Except that I use the 1/2" when I want to test the accuracy of a torque wrench against
one I know is accurate. It allows me to connect 2 torque wrenches together.

None of the Craftsman sockets I have from that era have "USA" on them.
But the wrenches do.

V should be for Easco and Easco has been bought out ages ago. I would let the sockets sit in solvent or vinegar for a while and see how much chrome is left before polishing.

Now THAT is a great idea. I will remember it.

If you have a rock or ammo tumbler put them in with walnut or corncob media. It may take a day or two but they will get squeaky clean.

Very nice find!

Eight point sockets are one of those tools you never need until you do. And when you need 'em, you need 'em. You know? :)

Clean 'em up, protect 'em, and stash 'em. You or your heirs will need them eventually...

This.

Last weekend I replaced my old garage door. It had all square nuts and lag bolts.
I have a couple of 8 point sockets but none in the sizes I needed for the door.
I don't have any 12 point sockets either.
I used damaged head remover sockets to remove them.
