Craftsman Vari-Slo. I need a measurement please. And how to repair a brake

I picked up an old Craftsman 100 last night. It has the vari-slo. But its missing the control knob on top.

I've found a close replacement I think. Does this knob look like the original with the ridge around it. If seen some with. And some with out the ridge. Don't know which is correct. I'm not going to be that **** about it. This is the knob I will use.

I need to cut it to length and re-thread it. Can I get a measurement from the bottom of the knob to the end of the threads. And then the length of the threads. Thanks

Both of mine have the ridge around the knob. The shaft sticks out 1 7/8 and is threaded 3/4 in from the end.

Is it 1-7/8 from the bottom of the ball like shown in my pic. Or is that with out the ball on it.

Can you tell me where you are taking your measurements from. Are you unscrewing the rod out of the holder.

If I'm understanding correct. You are unscrew the rod off of the machine??

From the bottom of the ball to the end of the rod is 1-7/8''.

The last 3/4'' is threaded.

I got it at a local tool shop.

Forgot about this part. Turns out the column support bracket is broken. Seems to be a common thing.

Have you guys had any luck welding them. Does the weld hold.

I could maybe make a new one. I wonder what would be the best material to make it out of. I could do billet aluminum, or steel. If I did aluminum, would it corrode with the steel column. Wounder why they didn't make them out of steel to begin with.

IDK. If you guys say a weld will hold, that would be much easier,,,lol.
