Hi all. New here. Let me start off by saying this is a great site. My mother in law has given me her fathers vice. Its a Craftsman #05197 made in Sep 1952. It is a sweet vice. I want to tighten the vice up a bit. When I got it I had to turn the handle a couple turns before the jaws would move. There is a little block of steel with a set screw that I tightened and that seemed to do the trick. There is also another screw with a slot in the part that the handle screw goes into. Is this another adjustment screw? It doesn't seem to do anything when tightened. The last picture shows the main screw holder with the slot and screw.
Let me know if there is any info on this.
Thanks

Another issue is the handle and screw is wobbly. I took out the main screw and it has what looks like a this steel bushing pressed into the movable jaw. Its worn and makes the main screw wobble. Has anyone ever replaced this before. Is it as simple as knocking out the old one and pressing in a new one?

Mix: first off welcome to the forum and you came to the right place if you want help making your vise better. first off I LOVE CRAFTSMAN 519x's vises and we are not totally sure which company made them for Sears. leaning towards ROCK ISLAND vise company if you ask me.

there are many many Craftsman vise restoration threads where you might do better reading them and asking members that have had their 519x's in pieces. or post up your questions on this Vise Repair 101 thread where some of the guys posting on there could possibly make a great vise if they wanted to.

i'm not sure exactly which method you should use to fix your slop. do you weld cause it looks like maybe the screw is coming loose from the Hub?

good luck and hopefully you will find your answer. also know that you have just got one of the nicest 4.5 inch wide jaw vises made in my opinion.

cheers
